Birds and animals are an integral part of hindu mythology. In the Nala Damayanti story, the Hansa (swan) takes the message of love to Damayanti who then expresses her own desires for Nala. Often humanoid birds in mythology worked as messengers or mediators. Jatayu in Ramayan tries to fend for Sita as she is abducted by Ravan. Jatayu's brother Sampati informs Ram of the abduction. Garuda is the vehicle of Vishnu. The Owl is the vehicle for Lakshmi in Bengal. And the swan is the vehicle for Saraswati (and Brahma). Animals and birds have been included in our mythology because they were and continue to be a part of our lives.
