do you have any recommendations for books or online resources about how to improve your writing / write well? just wondering ^^
Hmm! I took one creative writing class in college and I really liked the book we used for that, though I only read some of it: “Writing Fiction” by Janet Burroway (think we used eighth edition). It’s just about the only college textbook I kept!
Other than that, I really, really, really, SUPER love the Brandon Sanderson lectures! They’re mostly geared towards writing SFF (which is what I do when I’m not writing fic) but I just love everything he has to say about storytelling. They’re super long but you can listen while folding laundry or doing dishes or something! I listen a little bit at a time.
Furthermore, I tend to read the blogs/pages of authors I like, though I’ve been doing it less recently. Lastly I think one of the best things you can do for your writing is to read a lot! Your scope will widen by reading various genres and styles. I definitely struggle to find the time/motivation to read sometimes because it’s so much easier just to scroll twitter or tumblr (and once a book hooks me I tend to finish it in one fell swoop so I’m always ~between books~) but if you can block out some time in the day to read I think that’s very helpful! You’ll notice passages in the stuff you’re reading and identify what you like & don’t like, etc. A lot of it isn’t conscious, though it will make you a much more critical reader, which isn’t always welcome---but as a critical person, when you appreciate stuff, you end up really appreciating it! Ah, anyway, I’m starting to ramble, but these are some of my recs C: I hope they’re helpful!
