Since they saw their mother's death announced on news, the two children have refused to leave the house and answer any phone calls, mostly under Ethan's orders. He's sure they'll be taken by some awful people from social services that will split them up and send them to abusive people, or worse.

Kayla thinks he's watched too many movies but lets the phone ring and skips school anyway, just in case.

They've refused to contact the exterior world for three days, occasionally wondering what happened to their mother's body when someone knocks on their door.

"I know you're in there," they hear a sweet woman's voice with a thick Mexican accent. "So, open up."

"Or we will melt the door," another voice, much colder and lacking any noticeable accent, adds.

"What!? Really, Yu!? Here I am, trying to get them to let us in and you threaten them!?"

"That's what we're planning on doing, isn't it?"

"Well, yes, but they don't need to know that!"

Scared, the two siblings leave the two women quarreling outside while each grabs a pair of kitchen knives and they topple down the dinner table to serve as a barricade.

"We're armed!" Ethan yells, sounding more hysterical that scary as he intended.

"Uck! This is stupid and pointless! I'm going in!" Yu complains.

The siblings hear something sizzling.

The Baker siblings return home from school, Kayla does her homework on the living room table while Ethan watches TV instead of doing his when they receive awful life changing news.

Ethan's show is interrupted with a special announcement - a bank is being robbed and, so far, there has been at least two fatalities. One is some unknown man and the other, their mom.

The preteen curses loudly while Kayla weeps.

Once Kayla has finished her shower, she puts on her rabbit bathrobe and goes wake up her brother. Sometimes all it takes is to shake him softly, other times she must pull his covers off or even drag him to the floor. This morning, it takes a glass of cold water to get him to open his eyes.

"Good morning," she greets her brother giggling at his curses. Kayla knows she probably shouldn't enjoy how hard it is for Ethan to get up in the morning, she just finds it so funny!

Ethan is still upset when Kayla goes to her room to get dressed.

When the man of the house enters the kitchen, his precious mother and sister are already eating breakfast.

To him, it's like watching a majestic queen - powerful, elegant and with a steady hand on her kingdom. A month ago he skipped class to go bowling with some friends and his mother made him stand at the corner of the living room as if he was a naughty little toddler. He felt so embarrassed! And her sweet little princess, delicate and innocent. And then there's him, the brave prince in shinning armor who will protect his queen and princess with his life, if necessary.

Once they finish eating, each grab their own bag and, after Morgana tells her son to pull his pants up and confirms her daughter didn't forget to place the money for her school field trip in her backpack, Kayla and Ethan go to school while Morgana goes to work.

On her way to the flower shop where she works, Morgana keeps reminding herself not to forget she has to try to go to the bank during one of her breaks.

Ethan grumbles under his breath. He has had the feeling he's being watched for days now but whenever he tries to find his stalker all he sees is a stupid raven.

In front of him, his sister skips merrily on her way home. Three years younger than him, Kayla is always extremely cheerful and nice, just like their mother.

After their father died six years ago, when he was eight and she was five, he decided it was his duty to protect them.

"Are you okay?" Kayla asks him as she waits for the cars to stop to cross the road. "You look kind of mad."

"I'm fine. It's just-that stupid bird!" Ethan picks up a lose rock and tosses it at the raven, missing it by several inches. "Go away!"

"Ethan! Don't do that!" Kayla yells at her brother.

"But that bird's following us!"

"It's a bird."

Said bird watches the two siblings argue from above. The young teen is right, he has been following them for weeks.

Raven, as the bird is known, is the Finder of the Gemstone Alliance, an alliance that traded their skills for money, goods and knowledge during the War.

Composed of five Warriors, Raven has already found all in the same world - a rarity.

The first was Sapphire, a young girl with a freckled face called Marian who had since grown into a perky, beautiful woman. Then came Yu, the Ruby Warrior, easily found once the previous Ruby perished since she works in the same college as the new Sapphire. Small and thin, she may look harmless but can make an entire room go quiet with just a glance.

The third was Emerald, known as Lilian. This red haired young woman is a rising star with the voice of an angel and the personality of a demon. Power hungry and quick to anger, she has been trying to convince the other two to become super heroes ever since she learned how to use her enhanced speed.

Unfortunately for her, Yu is more interested in experimenting with the poisons the Ruby necklace gave her in her lab and Marian fears how the world would react to her hypnotic powers.

Finally, the last, Diamond and Onyx Warriors died around a month ago and Raven has been following these two young humans ever since.

He would have talked to them already, but Marian forbid him under the threat of hypnotism. She had done a few mistakes she regretted deeply with her powers and blamed it on the young age at which he gave her her necklace.
