Ax used to do that thing in human morph when he would say a word and then work it over and over again because it was fun to say.
Well apparently isolation has turned me into an Andalite in human morph because I just talk to myself all the time and when something rolls off the tongue particularly well, boy howdy, do I repeat that sucker!
I think I've long been in denial about the fact that three of my characters are not meant to be a het couple and a third wheel bestie, but are, in fact, meant to be a polycule with the third being ace but really in it for the cuddles and romance.
Now that it's finally crystallized in my head that this is what their relationship is actually supposed to be like, a really beautiful hurt/comfort scene is simply flying from my fingertips and it's making me want to weep at the image of two them cocooned around the poor heartbroken ace that just wants to be hugged and held and gently rocked until she can piece herself back together again from the death she should have prevented but couldn't.
Beautiful things happen when you let your characters tell you their truth.

I taught my mom what "Extra" means (as slang) and later in the day she used it properly and I've never been so proud.
Catcalling
So, I was out walking today (let's be honest, I was playing Pokemon Go) at a local park. My hair was half up, exposing the purple layer underneath. I passed some men sitting at a picnic table and one, very enthusiastically, shouts at me, "Your hairdo is amazing! That looks so awesome!" His buds chime in and I can't help but laugh and thank them as I walk on.
That interaction? That's an example of how a man can genuinely compliment a woman that is a stranger to him without making her feel threatened and actually feel like, yes, she has been complimented.
So if you're a guy trying to get the attention of a woman you don't know by commenting on her appearance, that's the way to do it. Be genuine, don't make it sexual, and pick a feature that she makes active choices about, like my purple hair, which is obviously not lucky genetics.
Book recommendation
So, after listening to all five books in the Heartstriker series by Rachel Aaron (beginning with "Nice Dragons Finish Last") I must say that I was delighted!
Sci-fi urban fantasy (that's seems like a bit much, but it's quite smoothly introduced with a very tidy tie-in to our own current history) that did a good job of not dumping too much world-building on you all at once while also providing enough to set a sufficient scene.
The main characters are funny and endearing, and whenever they seemed to be falling victims to some of the more dumb clichés of fiction, they dodge right around it by being actually intelligent! That was one thing I like the most about it; the characters were actually SMART and the solutions they came up with weren't ones that I could have seen from miles away. I liked the surprises! All in all, five stars! I may need to get physical copies of the series since I liked the audiobooks so well.
My brother and I (who I dragged into DND with me) watching Hunchback of Notre Dame tonight and saying things like "They rolled a 4 on stealth, but the guards got a 2 on perception" when Quasi and Esmeralda were escaping the cathedral, and "Check out that strength check" when Quasi escaped his chains, and "Nat 20" when Phoebus caught Quasi falling from the roof.
This somehow makes movies even more entertaining. And now I want to create a monk character based on Quasimodo (probably a half-orc...).
I need someone to talk Trollhunter feels with meeeeeeeee!!!
