Imagine serving an emperor whose dynasty conquered your people and knowing that any little misstep could get you executed and being so scared that you lash out at his prisoners so you can feel like you have at least some ounce of control in your life…
And then one of those prisoners saves you. When your punishment finally comes, instead of leaving you to your fate, he saves your life fully expecting the cost to be his own. And this act of compassion emboldens you to help him and his friends escape and rebel against your emperor. (What I’m saying is Kazor had to have fallen in love with Duke at least a little bit.)
