The first sounds Y/N hears as she begins to regain consciousness are the rhythmic beeping of medical equipment monitoring her heart rate and people's voices murmuring in the background. She lets out a slight wince as she opens her eyes. The overwhelming brightness of the hospital emergency department causes her eyes to squint against the harsh glare of her surroundings. It takes a moment for her senses to adjust to the strong smell of antiseptic cream, hospital-grade bleach, and the sterile white ceiling above her.
A flood of confusion rolls over her as she tries to recall how she got to the one place she wanted to avoid more than her dysfunctional household. She finds little ease in the pieces of memories that flood her mind—the abrupt onset of dizziness and disorientation, the headlights coming directly towards her, and the blurry face of the person who pulled her out of the path of the car that wasn’t slowing down. Her gaze darts around the room, taking in the sight of doctors engaged in discussions as they go over charts and treatment plans, nurses moving from patient to patient, tending to them with a mixed expression of focus and empathy, and family members hovering anxiously at the bedsides of their loved ones. But amidst all the chaotic activity of the emergency room, her eyes landed on a boy slouched in the chair beside her bed. He's still dressed in his school uniform with his head bowed forward and steadily breathing as if he had just fallen into a deep sleep. Y/N doesn't recognize him or his uniform, but for some strange reason there is a sense of familiarity. She wonders if he’s the one who saved her from being hit by the car.
As she studies him more closely, she notices the way his hair falls across his forehead and how his fingers twitch slightly as if he’s dreaming. An unexpected feeling of gratitude comes over her. She opens her mouth to say something, hoping to wake him so she can thank him, but images of her aunt’s cold, expressionless face twisted into pure rage flash in her mind, causing panic to surge through her body.
In an anxiety-induced rush, she fumbles to remove any medical equipment attached to her body, finds, and picks up her bag before running from the hospital, ignoring the shouts and protest of the staff, to find the nearest bus stop.
She is only a short distance from the hospital grounds when she is stopped by fingers encircling her wrist. She spins around to confront the person, her eyes widening when she realizes it's the boy from the hospital. But now she can get a better look at him; a gasp leaves her lips as a memory comes to mind.
Y/N is sitting on the couch, a blanket over her lap, her arms wrapped around her legs as she has her knees pulled to her chest. Her eyes are glued to the TV as she watches one of her all-time favorite K-dramas. Hearing someone enter the living room, she looks up to find her brother, a soft smile on his face as he makes his way over to sit beside her.
‘What are you watching?’ He asks, using his hands to sign the words.
“What do you think?” Y/N says out loud as she signs back to him, a small smirk playing on her lips as he lets out a quiet groan, seeing the familiar drama playing on the screen.
‘Don’t you ever get bored watching this?’ He asks, a teasing look on his face. ‘How many times have you watched it now? 100 times? 1000 times?’
“It’s not my fault it’s become my comfort show,” she replies, turning her head back to the screen with a slight pout. Not even a second later, she turns back to him, tapping his knee to get his attention. She begins to sign again. “I can turn it off if you want to watch something else.”
It was in that moment her brother really looked at her. He saw the sadness in her eyes, the droop in her shoulders, and the smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. Something had happened that day, and she didn’t want to talk about it. Not yet anyway. Instead, he pulled her into his side, giving her shoulders a reassuring squeeze as he watched her favorite comfort show, Twinkling Watermelon, with her.
Y/N felt her legs give out from underneath her, but before her knees could hit the cold, hard, wet footpath, the boy caught her, his grip on her tightening. “Hey, are you okay?”
Her eyes meet his before moving to his name tag pinned to the chest of his blazer. 하이찬
She quickly pushed away from him, shaking her head in disbelief as her eyes met his once again. "You're not real! This isn't real!"
Ha Yi-Chan looks at her with a mix of fear, concern, and confusion. "Maybe I should take you back to the hospital. The doctors are still trying to find out what happened to you."
"I can't go back there," she tells him in a way that makes him think that there is something much deeper to why she ran from the hospital and refuses to go back.
"They'll be able to he—"
She cuts him off, shaking her head. "I'm fine. "I just want to go home," she says, trying to hide the tremble in her voice. He goes to say something else to convince her to go back, but she speaks again with a polite bow. "Thank you for saving me and staying until I woke up."
With that, she turns on her heel and runs to catch the bus that just pulled up outside the bus stop a few feet away.
As she sits on the bus, Y/N's mind continues to race with thoughts, trying to come up with an explanation for what is going on. Did she really just do a W: Two Worlds Apart? It couldn't be possible. No one can dimension hop into a fictional world, let alone a fictional world set almost three decades earlier. So, she must be dreaming, right? Dreaming one of those very realistic dreams that makes you question reality when you wake up kind of dream.
Just as the bus begins to move, she feels someone sitting down in the seat beside her, bringing her out of her thoughts. She looks to her side, her eyes widening again in surprise when she sees Yi-Chan.
Before she can say anything, he looks at her. "You're clearly going through something right now, and I'll feel better once I know you're home safe," he says, his eyes moving to the front of the bus.
"Home," she breathes out, feeling the adrenaline starting to leave her body and exhaustion take over. "I'm not from here," she says quietly, more to herself, as she shrinks in on herself, pulling the cuffs of her hoodie over her hands before wrapping her arms over her stomach. "I have nowhere to go," she adds, hoping he wouldn't hear her.
"You run away or something?" he asks, his eyes not leaving the front of the bus.
"Or something," she mutters under her breath as she looks out the window. The familiar streets flash by outside, but now, they feel and look different. It wasn't real-life, modern-day, 2023. This was fictional, in the past, 1995.
At the fourth stop, Yi-Chan took Y/N's wrist once more and guided her off the bus. "What are you doing?" She asks as he drags her up the street. Her body and mind are too exhausted to do anything.
"You said you have nowhere to go. My halmeoni owns a boarding house. She'll let you stay with us," he assures her and adds, "Even if it's just for tonight," before she has a chance to object.
It didn’t take long for them to arrive at the Snail Boarding House. “Halmeoni!” Yi-Chan calls out to his grandmother as they enter through the gates. “Sorry, I’m late home. I was helping a friend.”
His grandmother walks out of the building, grumbling to herself, but stops when she finds her grandson standing there with a girl. She looks between the two teens, stunned. Yi-Chan had never brought a girl home before.
“Who is this?” She asks, her voice a mix of curiosity and concern as her gaze shifts to the girl, noticing how exhausted she looked.
“This is L/N Y/N,” Yi-Chan replies, his tone firm but gentle. “She needs a place to stay for the night.”
Y/N looks at him, trying to remember if she told him her name. She doesn't think they exchanged names since she only knew his name from his name tag and the countless times she's watched Twinkling Watermelon. Her head starts to spin again as she reminds herself of what is happening.
Yi-Chan's grandmother studies Y/N for a moment and takes in the girl's weary and exhausted expression. “Come in, dear. You look like you could use some rest," she says as she places a warm hand on Y/N's elbow and quickly ushers her inside. "Are you hungry? I can go get you some food."
Y/N hesitates, her stomach rumbling audibly in response. She hasn’t eaten since her school's lunch break, and who knows how long ago that was with her unexpected portal jumping?
"That's all the answer I need." Halmeoni smiles as Y/N feels her cheeks heating up with embarrassment. "Yi-Chan-ah, go put some blankets in the room across from yours. Y/N can stay there tonight," she tells her grandson as she leads Y/N to the kitchen to get her some food.
Yi-Chan does as he’s told for once while Y/N follows Halmeoni into the cozy kitchen. The aroma from the food that was cooked this evening still lingers and causes Y/N’s stomach to grumble out loud once again.
“Have a seat,” Halmeoni instructs gently, gesturing towards a table with cushions around it. Y/N sinks down onto one of the cushions, feeling the weight of her exhaustion settle deeper into her bones. She watches Halmeoni move around the kitchen collecting leftover food for her and Yi-Chan as well as some water and glasses.
“Thank you,” Y/N politely says, the first words she’s said since arriving at the boarding house.
Halmeoni watches her with a kind smile, settling down across from her. “You must have been through quite an ordeal,” she says softly, concern etched in the lines of her face. “But you’re safe here now.”
Y/N pauses hearing her words, looking down at the bowl in front of her. She opens her mouth to say something but quickly closes it again, unable to find the words she needed to make her ordeal seem less crazy than it was. She herself was still trying to grasp everything that had happened. 'I time-traveled into a fictional world without even realizing it' would surely have her locked up in some psych ward or a scheduled appointment with a priest or shaman. Taking a deep breath, she tries to push everything aside and focus on the meal in front of her. Yi-Chan returns shortly after and takes his seat next to Y/N before digging into his own bowl of food.
"Which school do you go to?" Halmeoni asks, wanting to know more about the only girl Yi-Chan has brought home. The fact she has never heard him, or his friends, mentioning Y/N before has her curiosity piqued.
Y/N places her chopsticks down beside her bowl, her appetite no longer an issue. “I don’t go to school here,” she says, unsure of what to say. After all, her school is here, just not in this world.
“She goes to a boarding school, just outside of Seoul,” Yi-Chan lies for her even though he doesn’t know the story himself.
“Then how did you two meet?” Halmeoni continues to question them.
The two teens look at each other as if they were caught in a web of uncertainty. Y/N's heart raced as she searched for an answer, but the truth felt too bizarre to share.
"He saved me from being run over by a car," she answered before he could, sticking to a little of the truth. Something stirred within her, a feeling that she couldn't completely lie to Halmeoni.
Yi-Chan nodded, going along with it.
Halmeoni's eyes widen in surprise. "When did this happen?"
"A... A few months ago," Yi-Chan answered this time with Y/N nodding along. "Halmeoni, enough with the questions," he quickly cuts off his grandmother as she's about to ask something else. "Y/N's had a rough day. Let her rest. You can interrogate her tomorrow."
Y/N's wide eyes turn back to Yi-Chan. "I'll be going back home tomorrow," she says, her voice coming out quiet and unsure. 'Hopefully,' she adds in her mind.
After they finish eating, Yi-Chan shows her to the room she would be staying in before going to help his grandmother to clean up the dishes. In the middle of the room, she finds a sleeping mat laid out with blankets folded up on top of it. Beside the blankets is a pillow, and on top of the pillow is a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt. Staring at the sleeping mat for a moment, Y/N feels thankful for the grandmother and grandson’s hospitality. If it weren't for them, she would be sleeping out on the street even more lost and alone than she already feels.
As she changes out of her uniform and into the clothes Yi-Chan provided, she notices everything in the room looks the same as it did on screen, right down to the smallest details. While watching Twinkling Watermelon, she always wondered what it would be like to stay in a place like this and if it would be as cozy as it looked.
Sighing softly, Y/N kneels beside the mat and unfolds one of the blankets. The fabric is soft against her fingers, bringing back memories of cozy nights spent watching dramas with her brother while binging their favorite snacks.
Laying down, she turns on her side, facing away from the door with the blanket pulled up over her shoulder. An ache settles in her heart as exhaustion takes over. As much as she hoped she was dreaming right now, it was beginning to weigh heavy on her mind that maybe she wasn’t and for some weird, unknown reason she was really stuck inside her favorite drama.
