The Actress- One of Us is Lying- Part 2

“Hey, pretty girl!” I’ve spotted Cooper and his girlfriend, Keely Soria, standing next to his locker. Some people wouldn’t like the idea of intruding on your brother and his girlfriend. But Keely and I have been close longer- we met in eighth grade, when our family first moved here.
“Prettier.” Keely’s free hand- the one that isn’t holding Cooper’s- slides up and plays with a piece of my hair. This is us- this is the way we interact. As Addy comes down the hallway, we pull our third friend close.
“Prettiest,” we say together. We’ve been acting like this since freshman year, when Cooper introduced me to his new best friend, Jake, and his girlfriend, Addy. I introduced her to Keely, who wasn’t dating Cooper yet- that didn’t start until junior year. I have other friends in my fellow theatre nerds, but I know I’ll always have these two, even though I’m not “popular” in the main circles like them- only by association and among the theatre nerds, which is where I’m happy. The four of us are about to start a conversation- probably about Simon, since that’s the only thing people have been talking about since Monday- when the loudspeaker crackles on.
“Attention, please. Would Cooper Clay, Nate Macauley, Adelaide Prentiss, and Bronwyn Rojas please report to the main office. Cooper Clay, Nate Macauley, Adelaide Prentiss, and Bronwyn Rojas to the main office.” Keeley slips her hand out of Cooper’s.
“You guys’ll be fine. I’m sure they just have a few more questions,” I say. I’ve always been the rational one. I grab Addy’s hand and squeeze it. Cooper told me the whole story, so I know what happened. And how much it affected her. “Coop, I’m done at 4:30 today, okay? Meet you outside.” Keely and I split away from them as they head to the office.
“They’ll be fine, right?”
“I’m sure they’re fine, El.”
