Sea of Stars Pain Headcanons

Zale: He has a very low pain threshold but a high tolerance. Winces, shouts, squirms when his wounds are being tended to. Will cry and scream during battle and rush forward to fight until he passes out, and gets very clingy when he’s hurt. Emotional pain, Zale tends to isolate and distract himself, usually unsuccessfully.

Valere: She manages her pain well in battle, though can still be a bit reckless, like Zale. Knows when would be better to back off than pick a fight, and prefers to nurse her wounds in solitude. Tends to meditate on emotional pain and mull over her thoughts.

Garl: He’s a big, strong guy who hides his physical pain and acts like he’s okay, when he really really isn’t. Can work through physical pain and tends to suppress emotional pain, hiding it deliberately for the sake of his friends.

Seraï: Her cyborg biology is unique in that her mechanical parts don’t feel any pain, but her flesh parts feel it the way humans do (The junctions between flesh and metal are excruciating when injured). She tends to ignore pain and often gets ahead of herself with how much she can handle. Like Garl, she suppresses her emotional pain and pretends things are okay.

Teaks: Has had her fair share of ouch from traveling and is relatively sturdy, though she tends to avoid conflict. Knows a bit of basic medical care because she travels by herself. She tries to drown out her emotional pain, burying her nose into her studies or running off for another adventure.

Resh'an: He has gotten so used to physical pain that he doesn’t care anymore and doesn’t really even feel it. Arm chopped off? Alchemy can fix that. Crushed by a boulder? Not for long with the Elixir. He simply doesn’t care. Resh’an tends to run away from his emotional pain rather than confront it, hiding away for decades at a time.

Aephorul: As a consequence of flesh alchemy, Aephorul can control how much pain or sensation he can feel at any given time. He’ll tamp it down before a battle or confrontation.. or turn it up, if he feels he deserves it. He broods through emotional pain, and takes it out on those around him.

B'st: He feels none of it because of his glass body, and as such has very little regard for himself in dangerous situations. However, emotional pain strikes him hard and he’ll often dissociate when it happens.

Yolande: As the one who picks fights and sometimes gets carried away, Yolande has learned to manage pain for the sake of keeping her crew safe. She grows serious when she’s got emotional pain, and it’s easy to tell.

Valtraid: Doesn’t have the highest pain tolerance, but he’ll grit his teeth and bear physical pain with a smile to try and lighten up the feelings of worry that go with. He’s good at hiding his emotional pain and doesn’t easily admit it when he is.

Keenathan: From losing his leg to nearly cutting out his own eyes, Keenathan is no stranger to pain and has a very high tolerance for it. He bears emotional pain as silently as physical pain, if only to be more clingy to those around him.

Every Ship in Sea of Stars (A Playlist)

I made a playlist featuring every (well, almost every) ship in SoS! The playlist is also available as a normal YouTube and Spotify playlist if you prefer those.

It was a struggle coming up with songs for some of these, but here are my reasonings under the cut, even if flimsy:

Next To Me – Emeli Sandé (Valere x Zale) The two always have each other’s backs despite the odds. Nothing can tear them apart. 

Red – Survive Said the Prophet (Valere x Garl) Valere’s rage over Garl’s death. She so desperately wished she could say a proper goodbye to him. 

Never Love an Anchor - The Crane Wives (Valere x Seraï) Boat metaphor for Klee’shae hehehe. Seraï keeps herself closed off from others, not wanting to lose them like she did basically everything in her world. Their relationship would be very sweet once she lets her guard down. 

I Do Not Hook Up - Kelly Clarkson (Valere x Resh’an) Valere would be helping Resh’an through his relationship trauma one day at a time. A very slow burn kind of relationship, with Valere serving more as his therapist than girlfriend at times. 

I Hear a Symphony – Cody Fry (Valere x B’st) Music motif for B’st. Not much else to it because I don’t have much to work with. 

Beautiful Things – Benson Boone (Zale x Garl) Song showcases “the darkness” inside of Zale being his fear of losing Garl. 

Tongues & Teeth – The Crane Wives (Zale x Seraï) Seraï once again not thinking she can really love. I think they would have a more argumentative yet positive relationship.

Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love) - Ella Fitzgerald (Zale x Resh’an) I have zero recollection of why I picked this, but I also can’t think of anything else to give them so whelp. Uhhh older music because Resh’an’s ancient. 

Hikaru Michi (The Shining Road) – Aya Hiroshige (Sonic X) (Zale x B’st) To be honest, I completely forgot why I originally gave this to them lol. Debated on replacing it with Nobody by Mitski.  

Moonlight Rendezvous – Beast in Black (Garl x Seraï) I have so many songs for them it was hard to pick just one, but I eventually settled on this one. 

The Bird Song – Noah Floersch ft. Em Beihold (Garl x Resh’an) Giver/killer dynamic fits, especially with Resh’an inadvertently being the one to kill Garl (I wouldn’t blame him or anything but still).

Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive – Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters (Garl x B’st) Put the two most positive characters together and bam. Nothing else to it. 

Cross My Heart I Hope U Die – Megan Smith (Seraï x Resh’an) I can’t see any way these two work out so a breakup song felt the most fitting lol. 

Scars – The Crane Wives (Seraï x B’st) Both had to endure so much, and I think they could really bond over that. 

booty shorts – lappy (Resh’an x B’st) When all content of this ship is sexual, can you really be surprised? I’m just giving the fans what they want lol. 

Overwhelmed – Tim McMorris (Garl x Teaks) Two wholesome characters have a very wholesome relationship surprise surprise! A super sweet love song just fits them to a tea. 

Sappho – Frankie Cosmos (Valere x Teaks) Cute lesbos! Teaks would 100% read Sappho as well.  

Just the Two of Us - Grover Washington Jr. feat. Bill Withers (Erlina x Brugaves) The two of them have always stuck together working for a brighter future for themselves. 

Six Months In A Leaky Boat – Split Enz (Keenathan x Captain Klee’shaë) With Seraï hiding her identity, it’d be hard for them to keep a relationship going. Still workable, especially once she admits her other identities to her crew, but a struggle for the time being. 

500 Miles – Peter, Paul, & Mary (Keenathan x Meliora) The distance shows how they won’t be together in their lifetime. 

First and Ten – Mom Jeans (Resh’an x Aephorul) I originally used 505 by Arctic Monkeys instead, but later settled on this one. The agreed separation yet lingering yearning of these two for each other. They can’t live without or with each other so really they’re just screwed.

keenathan's expression sheet is so intriguing and charming to me because in the game sans name debacle he's never anything but smiling. even after garl's funeral he's got that expression on his face which can be a little off putting even to his fellow crew members. in my head it was just him being a compartmentalization maxxer which i find reeeeally interesting. i really enjoyed taking that trait of his more seriously, and still i find these so cute 😭
