REVIEW
Killing Dad by Keith Wright
A dozen short crime stories collected into one volume that kept me reading from beginning to end. Every story had a bit of a twist, surprise, or provided food for thought.
As I read, I was reminded of O. Henry (William Sydney Porter), a favorite short story author of mine,. I first came across O. Henry in childhood watching a TV special dramatizing four of his stories. After that, I looked for and voraciously read as many of his short stories as I could find. The caliber of the stories in this anthology is such that I would gladly buy a large compilation of them to put on the shelf next to my thick volume of the Complete O. Henry Collection.
What I liked:
* Loved, actually, the surprise endings that came with a twist
* The power packed in few words
* Being made to see, feel, and care about the characters
* The rawness of life some of the characters faced
* Decisions made and the reasoning behind those decisions – both criminal and police – and the impact those decisions had
* The realness and believability of the stories
* The grit and darkness some of some
* Thinking about what I might have done if what some of the characters did
* The author’s introduction to each story that gives insight into the inspiration for the story or some aspect of it.
* That every story was different and special in its own way
* The writing style
What I didn’t like:
* Coming to the end of the book and wondering, while hoping, that the author would write more short stories for me to read in the future.

REVIEW
Fair Means or Foul by Keith Wright
Inspector Stark Series #4
It is 1987 and a killer contemplates killing for the first time. At an annual fair he sees prey and the prey seems easy to lure away from the crowd. A done deal, body hidden and nobody the wiser. Will the killer kill again and why kill in the first place? Well, that is what Inspector Stark and his team are determined to find out once they are called to the location Nicholle Tanner’s body has been found. Will they be able to solve the mystery of who the killer is or will others die, too?
What I liked:
* The era…brings back a lot of memories
* The story, plotting and writing
* David Stark: a good man who is excellent at his job. He also seems well grounded and in love with his spouse
* The glimpses into the lives of the characters…those on the hunt for the killer, the killer and the parents.
* The police procedural aspects of the story – how the case is worked
* The camaraderie between the police team
* The red herrings…there were plenty
* Knowing that most police personnel are vigilant and eager to do their jobs
* Being reminded that police are human and homicide detectives carry with them the weight of all they have seen.
What I did not like:
* The parents of Nicholle…very unlikable people
* Being reminded of moving to a new town, putting my children into a new school and realizing how alone they both were…made me believe this same thing could have happened to either of them
* Knowing that this type of crime happens all too often every day.

BLURB
The man sitting at the wheel of the car was 100 yards from his moment of destiny. He was oblivious to it, of course. Murderers don’t necessarily realise they are killers until a few seconds before it happens. Murderers are sometimes just like you and me. He would never have dreamed that such a thing might happen. Ridiculous. If anyone had told him that today was the day he would turn into a killer, he would have looked at them quizzically; questioning their sanity; instead of questioning his own. The murder investigation into the death of a young girl at Nottingham’s Goose Fair throws up several suspects, close to home and further away. The stream of inquiries spirals into a climax, and suddenly another young life hangs in the balance. Detective Inspector Stark and his team prepare to do anything to stop further bloodshed. They are willing to use any means necessary, whether it be fair means or foul. In his fourth crime thriller, critically acclaimed author, Keith Wright, once again regales the stark reality of murder, derived from his hands-on experience as a CID detective sergeant working in an inner-city area.
