“Thrilling Hunt Ends in Arrest,” Ottawa Journal. July 8, 1932. Page 4. ---- Man Caught Admits Taking Part in Slaying of Mountie. --- Canadian Press by Direct Wire. KELVINGTON. Sask.. July 7 - Admission he took part in the murder of Corporal L. V. Ralls on the outskirts of Foam Lake, Tuesday morning, implication of his brother and a third man and confession his name was not Danchuk, but Kurulak - these facts were gained by Royal Canadian Mounted Police in an alleged confession by the one member of the trio of desperadoes whom police have captured in the hunt for Rall's slayers.
The confession was made by Kurulak late tonight after he had been brought into Kelvington by police.
Besides himself. there, were his brother, Bill Kurulak, and a third by the name of Bill Miller, alias Gregory, Kurulak's confession stated. It is known that Miller has been wanted by, police since 1928 for a crime at Rosetown, the nature of which could not be learned.
Capture of Danchuk was effected amid a fusillade of shots from two of the men, who got away after a grueling, merciless and relentless pursuit since early Tuesday morning. when police and armed citizens of the district swarmed over muddy roads, at times their cars mired. They were often without food. But they stuck doggedly to their objective.
“Companions Caught, Trapped Desperado Ends Life With Shot,” Toronto Globe. July 9, 1932. Page 1. --- William Miller, Wounded by Pursuits in Gun-Fight, Kills Himself in Saskatchewan Bush - Second of Party Accused of Slaying Constable Captured While Asleep --- CIRCLING PLANES NEMESIS OF TRIO ---- (Special Despatch to The Globe.) Kelvington, Sask., July 8. - Trapped in a relentless circle of armed police and farmers, and already wounded in the ankle by a shot fired by one of the posse, William Miller shot himself to death here, late today, rather than be arrested and face trial with two companions for the murder of Corporal Leonard V. Rails, a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman.
Miller died in the bushy, farm-dotted hills of Central Saskatchewan where for more than three days he has eluded a pursuit carried forward with increasing intensity. Scores of farmers joined Mounted Police in the man-hunt.
The first of the trio, alleged to have been members of the party at the time Rails was slain on the highway near Foam Lake, Sask., was arrested yesterday. He was 17-year-old Mike Kuruklak, who surrendered when police came upon him as he was tending three horses in a farmyard. The fugitives had stolen the horses, mounting them to make better time as the possess drew closer.
Captured While Asleep Today William Kurulak, 30-year-old brother of Mike, was arrested without struggle as he slept under a tree on a farm. He was exhausted after a frantic flight with his two companions that started early Tuesday morning in an automobile and ended after 48 hours of ceaseless scuttling through scrubby timberland without sleep.
With the Kuruklak brothers in custody, the posse threw all its resources today in the hunt for Miller, said by police to be the most dangerous of the bandits. Several times they sighted him as he sped across open patches in the bush. When they fired Miller returned the shots from behind bushes and trees.
No one was injured in the battle with Miller, though he fired on more than a dozen occasions.
Hidden in woods near Warner Lake, thirteen miles northeast of Kelvington he was surrounded by the posse. For several hours he kept up a running gunfire, answering with bullets police commands to surrender.
Posse Charges Woods After a lull in the battle a section of the posse charged the woods. They found Miller dead, a bullet from his own rifle in his body.
For the first time in a man-hunt in this Province, aeroplanes were used by police. Two machines flew low over the country, keeping the ground forces posted on every movement of the fugitives. It was not known how the older Kurulak was arrested yesterday in a farmyard, firing on the police posse that took the youth into custody as they disappeared together into a forest.
But William Kurulak was alone when the posse surprised him as he slept today and Miller’s spectacular attempt to escape was carried out without aid.
Corporal Rails, 44-year-old Mounted officer, was killed almost instantly early Tuesday morning when he tried to halt a speeding automobile near Foam Lake. The Kurulaks and Miller are alleged to have been the occupants of the car. The shots were fired at the Mountie as he stood at the side of the road, the police allege.
Chase Leads to Bushland When residents found Rails a few minutes after the shooting, the car had disappeared into the north, and within a few minutes an official dragnet was out for its three occupants. Farmers reported to police at Yorkton and Foam Lake as the machine shot past their doors.
Near Lintlaw, a few miles from Nut Moutain, the car was found abandoned late Tuesday. The fugitives had taken to the bushland and the search was carried on to the finish in this neighborhood.
The Kurulaks are to appear in court here within a day or two. Police have not announced what charges will be laid against them.
Miller had been wanted since 1928 for an offence at Rosetown. The three are believed to have perpetrated a series of robberies.
