🔥 While hiking along a lava rock cliff, we came upon a group of Pele followers and/or admirers performing a sound or musical ritual for Pele, the Goddess of Fire and Volcanos 🌋 . 🌊 The sheer power of the ocean is intense to witness but, even more, it is inspiring to let yourself go and just experience its raw energy. . In this photo, I am standing on a 75 foot wall of lava. . The ocean is so powerful here that it leaps over the black lava formed cliff. . [Historical Note] This area used to be the (traditional Hawaiian) fishing village of Kalapana, which was completely wiped out by a lava flow in 1990. . This area also hosted “Kaimu Beach,” which, according to locals, was the most famous black sand beach in the world. . Now that beach is lost forever underneath 50-75 feet of hardened glistening black lava, which pushed the shoreline out .3 miles (a 5-10 minute walk). . This formed the “New Kaimu Black Sand Beach” but now that the lava flow has stopped flowing in this area the black sand has washed away and nothing is left but a very loud and treacherous surf 🌊 . The old Kalapana Village and Kaimu Beach must have been a beautiful place. But there are efforts by some locals to rebuild. A mighty effort you must admire! . Ps. I was lucky to walk along the sand of the “new black sand beach” on my first visit years ago. It was sand like no where else in the world. Don’t forget to look up. . I discovered this female “Pine Grosbeak” while #hiking through the #snow filled #backwoods near my wife’s family farm. This #birdie let me get right up close within arms length. Her calmness is likely due to being used to my mother in-law’s constant birding in the area and her well stocked feeding stations nearby. . Pine Grosbeaks are the largest member of the #Finch #bird family in North America and you can find them mostly in #Canada from coast to coast at feeding stations and in boreal type forests (also open areas like the prairies). #GoNorth for #Inspiration . Sometimes, there is nothing better than packing up the truck and #travelling up #north to #escape the increasingly busy world around us. . I remember day dreaming in this very spot 29 years and 29 days ago. I know, I wrote it in my journal. . As a 14-year old, at the time, I thought my life would always be here wandering the forest and being in a magical synchronicity with #nature. . I spent that unforgettable #summer with my father Robert #exploring remote places as a co-pilot in his truck that would expand the limits of your imagination. . Incredible #mountain plateaus, crystal clear alpine lakes, ancient volcano craters, mind blowing scenery, endless varieties of wildlife (and so much of it). . You could say, my roots as an #adventurer started in #northern #britishcolumbia. . Years later, I remember those moments as some of the best experiences of my life. . Both of my parents, created a world of #adventure while I was young and I will be eternally grateful to them both for showing me the #beautiful world around us all. .
