Ken Grant - ‘No Pain Whatsoever’

‘No Pain Whatsoever’ is a body of work from the photographer and MFA lecture Ken Grant. The body of images is a documentary piece of work that showcases the people in his hometown of Liverpool, UK. Ken, has used his precision and eye for detail to showcase an area in which the grime and dirt of hard life in Britain during the 90′s is at full play with the viewer. ‘No Pain Whatsoever’ is a further expansion but distinct body of work in its own right from his earlier work ‘The Close Season’, 2002.

Woffen into this body of work is a poem, in which it adds an another a foundation to which his images solidified in, they add and support the images in different ways of viewing them and responding to them. Looking at the image I selected out of this body of work the theme of working-class people are a dominant feature that I’ve showcased in other blog entries before.

The first image showcases a broken baby pram with the surrounding environment encased in a thick smoky atmosphere and picking out of the smoke a figure of a man possibly picking up rubbish. This shows the type of quality that the people of urban Liverpool were living in and subjective too.

The strong use of the monochromic black and white grain, showcases and demonstrates the gritty and hard times which it was for the working class poorer people of Liverpool of the time, and this is reflected through Grant’s use of strong contrasty punchy shadows and highlights in some images further showcasing the quality of life of the poorer public.
