And in episode 11 of “The Witch from Mercury”, titled “The Witches from Earth”, Avery returns. It has been twenty years since Prologue, from a pilot he has been promoted to Captain Kenanji and... as you can see he has put on quite a lot of weight, losing his prim and trim physique (but still keeping his good-looking face - it is especially obvious if you compare his face in Prologue, or the concept I posted previously to his face now, which despite being larger and rounder still has the same blue eyes, nose and mouth - I insist because for a very long time “manga aesthetic” had the habit of changing a character’s facial traits when they gained weight).
In fact, his new weight is talked about by the episode itself: before he arrives, two of the people in his team talk with each other. One says “Hey, did you know that the captain used to be an ace pilot?” and the other is like “No way! With his belly he couldn’t even fit in a pilot’s seat!” - only for Avery to pop up from behind them saying “I was thinner back then”.
His appearance is actually really small, just one short scene - but given it is the penultimate episode of the show, it seemingly just prepares for a bigger appearance in the finale episode. And given the 12th and final episode of the show will only air on the 8th of January, we’ll have to wait a bit before seeing him back :p
Can we all just appreciate how Kenanji's idea of "undercover" was "an entire ass beach outfit including pocket sunglasses and a gold chain"?
I think the most surprising thing about The Witch from Mercury at this point is the fact the way Kenanji Avery is being used by the narrative.
I feel like, in most stories, making a point of showing him get super fat between the Vanadis Incident and the current day would be visual shorthand to show that he's gotten complacent since then and is kind of a joke nowadays. On the contrary, he's still really good at his job, and handled escorting Guel (and revealing Shaddiq as the mastermind) and getting The Situation inside of the school under control about as well as could be expected for anyone with his job.
Unfortunately, his job is essentially being a cop.
