'There would always be music on the Donats' gramophone', recalls Takouhi, a neighboor and friend of the Donat family when Robert was around 10 years old. 'Robert would change the records. Whenever I hear The Ride of the Valkyries I always think of the Donats, because that was when I heard it for the first time. They would put it on the gramophone, and we would all sit around and listen to it, and "Isn't wunnderful?" they'd say.'

At his own house, Robert kept the family tradition. The photographs above show Robert, Joanna, John and Ella in 1935, before Brian Donat was born (3 August 1936). Robert wrote at the time of the arrival of his third child: 'I think the child's career has been decided for him already. Ella was playing a Bach fugue two hours before he was born. I was playing a piece by César Franck at the actual moment. He will probably be an organ-grinder'.

Robert made his vows to Ella under the guidance of her father, the Rev. Ellison Voysey, on 6 August 1929 in the Presbyterian Meeting House at Dean Row near Wilmslow. Mr Volsey said that Robert 'shone like the sun'.
