McConnell gets richer while Kentuckians get poorer
Over his 34 years in the swamp, Mitch McConnell has taken over a million bucks from big pharma. Meanwhile, many of McConnell’s donors’ companies have flooded our state with prescription pain pills. #SenatorForSale

A group of coal miners bused themselves all the way to DC to meet with Mitch McConnell and he gave them 2 minutes. But when coal barons gave him over a million bucks, he was all ears. Those are just his priorities. #SenatorForSale

McConnell campaign touts Chao’s meetings with Kentuckians

McConnell campaign touts Chao’s meetings with Kentuckians
The fact that McConnell’s campaign was eager to tout such news prompted blowback from some critics and even putative allies.
“Where are my ‘Corrupt for Kentucky’ shirts,” tweeted Doug Stafford, Sen. Rand Paul’s chief strategist, in response to the campaign’s promotion of the story, and tagged a former top McConnell aide.
A spokesman for Chao had no comment on the tweets, but McConnell’s campaign was unapologetic.
McConnell campaign manager Kevin Golden told POLITICO that McConnell’s status as Senate majority leader “gives Kentucky a great advantage over wealthier states like New York or California” and that his “tremendous influence has helped in a number of other ways.”
Democrats, however, said McConnell’s seizing on his wife’s position to boost his electoral chances was unseemly and unethical.
“Mitch McConnell’s unethical manipulation of his position and family ties to help himself and his political allies isn’t a selling point for Kentuckians,” said Stewart Boss, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. “When ethics experts say McConnell’s actions feel more like corruption to the average American, it’s not hard to see why McConnell is the most unpopular senator in the country and toxic with voters across Kentucky.”
Indeed, Virginia Canter, chief ethics counsel for the watchdog group Citizens For Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and former White House counsel to the previous two Democratic presidents, said the tweets raise new ethical questions about Chao’s dealings with her husband’s constituents.
“The McConnell campaign’s use of an article, which draws critical attention to Chao’s use of her public office to disproportionately benefit her husband’s constituents, raises new Hatch Act issues about whether she has authorized him to use her official position for partisan political activity,” Canter said.
POLITICO reported on Monday that 25 percent of Chao’s meetings with local officials over her first 14 months in office were with Kentuckians, while no other state had more than 6 percent. At the same time, she repeatedly snubbed officials from large states with major projects in the works who were seeking meetings.
The day POLITICO’s article appeared, McConnell’s campaign tweeted the article out, “Mitch McConnell is a Kentucky Asset” with a link to the article. (In July, the Washington Post printed a story with the title, “Mitch McConnell is a Russian asset.”)
The next day, the McConnell campaign tweeted a photo of the article in POLITICO’s print edition, along with a screenshot of a graphic from the article visualizing the large number of meetings Chao held with people from Kentucky in comparison with every other state.
