Three artists that moved me emotionally, and upon viewing (in print) pushed me enthusiastically forward to pursue the arts. One was Francis Bacon, whose painting ‘Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X’, I first saw in the pages of my family’s set of The World Book Encyclopedia as an example under the heading of “Painting.” The second was Andrew Wyeth. My elderly neighbor, knowing that I was interested in art, loaned me a book of his work. It was totally a new world to me, and I quickly found myself happily lost amongst the drawings and paintings represented in the monograph. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was when my neighbor, a few weeks later, kindly asked for the return of his book.
