30 Day SWTOR OC Challenge Day 17: Contrition
Is there any choice(s) they regret? What would they do differently, if they could?
If she could go back in time to stop herself from doing one thing, it would be the Tharan Incident. (Well, actually it would be one of the times she, through no fault of her own, ended up making a wrong decision re: battle tactics that got people killed. As Captain Picard said, “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life.” The Tharan Incident was, most definitely, a weakness, and one she should have known better than to make.)
Picture, if you will, a young, recently knighted Jedi who, in her travels, meets a rather presumptuous young scientist. “Presumptuous,” in this case being the polite Jedi term for “misogynistic ass.” Said misogynistic ass wants to join her crew. She does not want the misogynistic ass to join her crew.
She reluctantly allows the misogynistic ass on her crew only after having a nice long chat with him about respect and consent and the Jedi policy on relationships, making it explicitly clear that a) she is very uncomfortable with his inappropriate advances, and b) she is not above weaponizing this little chat by threatening to repeat it if he steps over the line again.
Now, Ker has nothing against Jedi in relationships. She just has something against this particular Jedi in a relationship with this particular man. Many things, in fact—the first and foremost being that she is not attracted to him in any way, shape, or form.
Second, and just as important, being he is a misogynistic ass.
Third being he is already in a relationship. One which she isn’t entirely sure the ethics of, because every time she tries to bring it up with either Tharan or Holiday they skirt around the subject. (It’s my headcanon that when she finally does sit them both down separately and doesn’t let them leave until she knows the truth, the full story isn’t nearly as gross and sexist as the game suggests, because seriously who the fuck thought that was in any way acceptable??????)
Fast-forward a little. Tharan dials way back on the flirting, and Ker gets to know him better. And they actually have a lot in common. They’re both intensely curious about the universe; he channels that into science, she into history and philosophy. They more she gets to know him, the more she warms up to him, until he’s easily her favorite companion for a time.
Basically, he pulls a Mr. Darcy.
After a while, she comes to the sneaking realization that her feelings towards Tharan are no longer strictly platonic. She gets that fluttery feeling in her chest that everyone says means love, and this may be the first time she’s felt that, but it feels pretty accurate.
Cue Kill Bill sirens. Cue (sometime later) the Tharan Incident.
It was just a kiss, and she stopped it before it went any further, but she regretted it before it even began. It was wrong, it wasn’t fair to Holiday regardless of what Tharan said, and she knew it would end in disaster. But she did it anyway, because by god did she want him.
In the end, she was rather guiltily relieved it ended so soon, and she and Tharan were eventually able to salvage their friendship. She’s never quite forgiven herself for that kiss, though.
