Little gay people running through fields and solving murders and such
I often see posts about curating your own online experience that make the point, “content creators aren’t your parents.” And, yes, that is absolutely true! And I try not to be like “as a parent,“ but as a parent…
EVEN PARENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO ENCOURAGE RESPONSIBLE READING/VIEWING BEHAVIOR. NOT filter everything ahead of time for their kid.
When my kiddo was 5, his pediatrician was asking him the usual Well Child Visit questions (“What are your favorite foods? What do you do to get your body moving? Do you know what to do if you get lost in a public place?” Etc.) and she asked, “What do you do if you see something on TV that scares or upsets you?”
I piped up like, “Oh, he doesn’t watch TV without one of us in the room,” which was true at the time and is still largely true now. She said, “Yes, but that won’t always be the case, so make sure you’re talking to him about what to do if he sees something that upsets him.”
So we started talking to him about that, and the answer is simple: “Turn it off or leave the room, and talk to someone you trust about what you saw and what you’re feeling.”
The answer is NOT “Ask your parents to make sure you never see anything upsetting again,” because that’s just not possible — and ultimately that would be doing the kid a disservice, since sooner or later he’s going to be out in the world where we can’t control what he watches or reads. That doesn’t mean we don’t try to make sure he’s watching/reading age-appropriate stuff, it just means that’s not the only safeguard he has — and that’s a good thing.
So yes, content creators aren’t your parents and aren’t responsible for making sure you never see anything you don’t like — but also, your own parents should have taught you what to do when that happens. So if they didn’t, take it from me, your internet mom:
Turn it off.
Walk away.
Talk to someone you trust about how you’re feeling.
And leave the person who created the thing that upset you alone.
we could go back to telegraphs instead of social media. send your mutuals unspeakable strings of morse code at 4:30am

personally i prefer semaphore
so prefacing this with the fact that I know that the fun is sorta taken out of this by me translating, but not everyone will have the energy to look it up themselves, so I figured I'd help out.
Morse code: AEEEEE FELL DOWN AND TROKE MY PENIT TODAY YEOWCE OUCH YOUCH!!!! SENT FROM MY TELEGRAPH
Semaphore: NO NOT YOUR PENITS
yeah okay ill reblog that

fantastic. i love it. i posted this after my wife said it yesterday and as i was doing it i was like "this can't be an original thought. as soon as i hit post someone's going to say 'you stole this from a tweet from 2014' and i'll say 'no, i stole it from my beautiful wife.'"
Do we really need this whole model? Need know why star not die. Need plan. Need model to make plan. Grace question is dumb. Oh boy.

Grace making huge advencements in the Eridian medical field.
Turns out there's a childhood disease to the tune of measles that erodes the carapace, and the first symptom shows up about a week before any actual damage is caused.
Grace comments to Rocky that one of his students seems to be turning oxidisation-green. About a week later that student has to be hospitalised for this illness.
Eridian scientists realise pretty quick that Grace can detect the illness long before any of their equipment can, and when caught that early it is much, much easier and safer to treat.
Not only is Grace celebrated in the scientific field for his knowledge and for his part in saving the world, he becomes a beacon of hope for doctors and parents and children on Erid.
The first early diagnosis test involve the equivent of sending a polaroid of the kids to Dr. Grace, who can write "OKAY" or "GREEN" on it
Quickly after that, rocky's color gun can be found in basically any school or clinic. Turns out in the time they've been coming back home, they've accidentally invented a tool that can eradicate the disease
Except Rocky's gun isn't a color gun, exactly, it's a light gun, taking old Eridian camera-tech (likely developed for very niche scientific purposes, to study phenomena in Erid's upper atmosphere or in orbit) and modifying it for hand-held use. If I recall correctly, it wouldn't function in the pitch-dark that is Erid's typical environment, so the medical device that gets created to test for this disease would be Rocky's gun plus a little flashlight attached.
In the future, Eridian children would get regularly checked out with that device to confirm that their carapace reflects only the expected amount of "middle-rough" light frequency. Passing those checks is a prerequisite for the child to go to classes, etc.
And so eventually, the phrase "given the green light" becomes an idiom for "given the go-ahead" on two different planets, for two very different reasons.
Both of these tags are right. I love when a cat will just put up with your silly human games. They love you and know you love them and are just happy with you.
Goal: Annoy the cat
Result: Failed. Cat loved it.
A very special @fandomtrumpshate piece for @spacemutineer, to illustrate their incredible time-loop story The Scientist's Method. I've always wanted to do a first meeting piece, and this was the most perfect opportunity to blend this iconic scene (featuring background redrawn from the original Hutchinson illustration) with spacemutineer's wonderful words. A long time ago, I did a few bits for some of their classic 60 for 60 stories, and it was fantastic to get the opportunity to work on something together again. Truly a marvellous project and we raised $150 for LA Foodbank!
Being an Eridian scientist has to be so funny. You train your entire life as a biologist, becoming specialized in your field, probably giving lectures or educational speeches to other Eridians, and then the star savior Rocky comes home with his weird pet dog. Your job is now to cultivate food so the weird dog who is the age of average baby doesn’t die. The dog also saved the stars. Your job is making dog food out of the dog. You also learn that you and the dog have the same job. You are the happiest scientist on Erid.
The dog knows more about how the universe works than anybody else on your planet. The dog understands how relativity works and how the universe began. The dog has access to complex machines that can store and process massive amounts of information, launching your society into a new age of scientific and technological advancement.
You later find out that these machines were originally invented because the dog's species has a memory like a sieve and struggles with primary school level maths.
such insolence... guards? seize her! ...no. stop. not like that. you are doing it gay. why are you seizing her gay style
thinking about the juxtaposition of preserum steve automatically getting flagged as gay vs 100 years in the future and post-serum literally nobody realizing he's gay. and steve having to figure out how to navigate that, if he even wants to correct the assumption.
its an appearance thing but also a cultural thing, except now hes found out gay culture obviously moved on without him. every way he knew how to signal he was gay is so outdated as to be nonsense to modern queer men, and you know hes mourning bucky so maybe hes not ready to be out anyways. maybe this is one more thing he can hide (keep safe) about steve rogers- captain america is heterosexual. steve isn't. another layer to it.
and maybe hes a little darkly satisfied every time tony makes a crack about it or nat tries to set him up with a woman; its his way of reminding himself They Don't Know Him. his workplace boundaries are secure. he can't lose them like he lost the howlies if he doesn't let them in. if they only know captain america then steve rogers can't lose them.
