This is a rant. Thank you. We just finished Ranga's Marriage (a chapter in our English textbook) and holy fuck?? It's about an adult man marrying a 11-year-old?? Now hear me out, you might be thinking, hey maybe the chapter is against child marriage. Maybe it's just a chapter to let us know how child marriages used to be so normalized in the past. For the first question, no. Nowhere in the chapter did it actually say the narrator (who set up the adult man with a 11 yr old) regrets what he did. Nowhere in the chapter did Ratna (the 11 yr old) say her views. And maybe this could be just a cautionary tale of what happened years ago (even my teacher felt the need to point it out) but it's not?? The entire chapter is about not forgetting our roots and customs? I don't understand how the teacher thinks the theme of the lesson is about our traditional customs and how important they are, WHEN it includes child marriage?
She literally said, "Look, this chapter is about the past and how we've developed since then." i'm sorry but where did it say that? "And it's also about the influence we had from English. About not forgetting our own customs." you mean the same customs we actually developed from? And if she was saying about the part where we should respect our elders, fuck that. DO NOT say nice things to a man who would willingly make a dude marry an 11-year-old just for the sake of getting the dude married!! This is not the first time we had shitty chapters like this. Remember Kesia's chapter where the girl was beaten by her father but it was seen as okay cause he was stressed? Hmm wow. Are we seeing a pattern? AND ANOTHER THING : IF THESE CHAPTERS WERE NECESSARY TO POINT OUR "EVILS", COULDN'T THEY HAVE FOUND STORIES WHERE IT ACTUALLY SAID THEY WERE EVIL?? Both these chapters were sort of NOT against the entire thing and that's really concerning?? If they needed us to have chapters talking about child marriages, they could have tons of other stories where it's not being narrated by a stupid narrator. And there are a lot of other things we need to know about that the syllabus isn't covering. Forced marriages still exist now. Where's the chapter about that? Where's the chapter about mental illnesses and how they're being ignored? WHERE ARE THEY? CBSE is fucked up. Thank you.
