Activist, author headlines Sankofa Conference

Considered one of the most acclaimed political, cultural and literary voices in America today, Kevin Powell will serve as keynote speaker for Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania's 23rd annual Sankofa Conference on Saturday, Feb. 17, in the Kehr Union Building Ballroom.

Kevin has written 13 books, including his latest, "The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy's Journey into Manhood." Later this year plans to publish a biography of Tupac Shakur. Powell's writings have also appeared in Esquire, Ebony, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, and on ESPN.com and CNN.com, as well as Vibe Magazine, where he worked for many years as a senior writer.

As a pop culture curator, Powell produced the first exhibit on the history of hip-hop in America at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. As a humanitarian, his work includes initiatives to end violence against women, including an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show highlighting domestic violence. He has done extensive philanthropic and relief work, ranging from Hurricane Katrina to Superstorm Sandy in New York to his annual holiday party and clothing drive for the homeless every December since 9/11.

Presented by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the day-long Sankofa Conference will begin at 10 a.m. with Powell's keynote set for 11 a.m. The conference will continue with workshops, presentations and group discussions for students until concluding at 5 p.m.

Sankofa grew out of the need for students to learn, understand, and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of people of African descent. It has developed as a way to promote unity and understanding among students, providing a forum for discussion and learning. Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana, translated to "it is not taboo to fetch what is a risk of being left behind."
