11, 12! ❤️
hi pal!! thanks for the ask!
11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
I read a ton of golden age crime fiction this year, so this applies to a lot of things! So I'm going to narrow it down to books I was also aware of specifically. I have been collecting Sarah Caudwell's Hilary Tamar books as I came across them used for years now (they all have Edward Gorey covers, which is part of it), and I finally started reading them this year. I read three out of four (because once I've read the fourth I'll be done and I don't want that to happen yet) and LOVED them. Written in the 80s, they're mysteries involving a set of British lawyers and their older friend Hilary who is an Oxford professor. It's some of the funniest, queerest, cleverest writing I've ever encountered, and as a fun added element Hilary's gender is never given. I wish I could wipe my brain and read them all over again.
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Plenty! One that stands out to me is Death in Ecstasy by Ngaio Marsh. I've been picking up Marsh paperbacks when I see them for ages (she's one of the golden age queens of mystery) but hadn't read any yet. I started with this one. It's a murder in a weird, theatrical church, and features her regular detective Roderick Alleyn. I got through the first chapters and quit on the strength of how incredibly homophobic some of the language was. Marsh was deeply involved in theater and definitely knew about queer people, so it was really shocking and disappointing.
