so we really out here pretending the key change in one world by the cheetah girls wasn't the best moment in our lives
Is there a big collection anywhere of songs that were originally in a major key converted to a minor key so they sound eerie and melancholy and songs that were originally in a minor key converted to a major key so they have pep and are a bop?
I don't know why more people don't put key changes into their songs? Cuz personally I'll be listening to new music like:
A song with lyrics and subject matter I actively dislike and try to avoid: 'don't think I'll play it again but I'll finish it at least'
*sudden key change in the final chorus*
Me, sighing regretfully: Welp. Into the playlist it goes.
(via Atonal Polka Version of the National Anthem)
they followed her “singing” with the appropriate chord changes...it’s anarchy in a musical key
I Love a Modulation
The way I listen to music isn't the same way most people do. I take suggestions seriously, but I may listen to only 3 seconds of a song and know whether I'm going to like it or not.
Sometimes I'll listen until the beat drops or the chorus because sometimes songs can surprise you.
My favorite thing to listen to is a chord change. Not ONLY in the music, but the lyric. I get shivers just thinking about it.
I KNOW I won't be able to explain what I mean. Only musically inclined people will get it. So this is for you.
The below are the two songs, I can think of at the moment, that have a key change. I won't lie, I've never listened to just the instrumental of these songs, but I do know the singer does sing a key change. This makes me so happy when I realize this happened. Sometimes it's an unexpected Easter Egg in a song that sends shivers up my spine. I get so happy and sing the fuck out of it (i mean, if I like the song and if I know the lyric).
A quick lesson: A chord/octave/key change is when a song goes from a minor chord to a major chord or vice versa.
Since I am no scholar, I figured I'd look up the definition:
In music, modulation is the change from one tonality to another...Modulations articulate or create a structure or form of many pieces, as well as add interest.
I'll be honest, I don't think the above definition describes it well LOL. It's too smart and buttoned up.
Well, well, well, the good ole' internet has helped me again. I changed the search and this is what I got (and what I mean): For a singer a key change is a transition of the starting note of a song to either a lower or higher note...Per example a sad song in an upper range, or a happy song in a lower range might sound out of place.
Sometimes a song will go from an upper key, to an even higher key (which I believe is the case in the two examples below).
Listen to the songs below. Let me see if I can help you realize where the changes are:
I Wanna Dance with Somebody: toward the end of the song after the "...and when the night falls, my lonely heart CAAAAAAAAALLLS," Ms. Whitney sings OOOH I wanna dance with somebody...If you listen carefully, of have sung the song a million times, as I have in my lifetime, you'll realize that she jumps from happy to happier. (it's at the 3 minute 38 second mark where the change happens, if you're watching the music video. I suggest you do actually)
Living on a Prayer: When they sing "oooooh, I'm half way there..." the WOAH OH changes and this one makes my heart so happy. It goes from happy to so much more fun. The first change is at the 3 minute 26 second mark. Then again at the 3 minute 30 second mark. then once more at the 3 minute 42 second mark. (again, watching the music video)
You guys may be wondering what type of weirdo I am. I promise you, my love for music runs deep. Ask anyone who knows me.
Let me tell you, these songs, listening to them, relistening to them, singing them and watching the music videos have reminded me of a better time.
I even sang an excerpt to my niece of I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
Just a quick side note: Today is a good day!
XOXO
Thanks for reading.
