Steven Universe spoilers under the cut.

After seeing gem relationships portrayed the way they are for so long, I’m not sure how I feel about Ruby.  It feels like she’s portrayed more masculine so that her and Sapphire can be analogous to a heteronormative relationship.  And I’m talking more masculine than Jasper, who was until now the most masculine gem, while still being decidedly female.

Of course, it’s possible that Ruby/Garnet watched a lot of 50′s sitcoms and Ruby took their portrayals of relationships to heart.
