Keyword Ciphers

So! You want to pass notes in class, but your teacher is good at picking them up, and what's worse, they make you read them out loud to the class! So what do you do? You use a cipher, of course. This one is so easy that you can use it pretty much anywhere with pretty much everyone, as long as the person you're talking with knows the keyword.  So basically, what you do is write out the alphabet like this: A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | M | N | O | P | Q | R | S | T U | V | W |

X | Y | Z

So now that you have your letters spaced out, you have to pick a keyword. Here, it's going to be "keyword", as it doesn't have any repeating letters. I'll show you how to do words that have repeating letters in a little bit! Basically, you just push the word into the beginning of the alphabet and shift everything over, taking out the letters that are in your keyword. So, it ends up looking like this:

Great! Now what?  Well, try writing a word using your cipher key! Try the sentence, "the cat jumped over the dog" as a starter. (hint: it's cao ykq cshlow jton cao wjd) The best thing about keyword ciphers is that they're pretty hard to decode if you don't have the keyword, and they're pretty simple to decode if you do! Now, if you wanna use a word that has repeating letters, don't fret! Just take the repeating letters out! Like so, with the keyword "funny":
