Designed by Malcolm Sawyer the first of the Series 1 cars were launched in March 1961 for export only becoming available to the home market in July 1961. Initially powered by a 3781cc S6 DOC engine. The Series 1 was upgraded in 1965 with a redesigned 4235cc engine offering better bottom end torque and mid range pick up, and a redesigned gearbox with syncromesh on on first gear, AC electrics, more comfortable seats, with Radial ply tyres becoming standard in 1966. The Series 1 2+2 was launched in 1966, 9 inches longer and with a proper rear door and an occasional rear bench seat and more luggage space. and the only six cylinder E Type with an option of Automatic transmission. This striking home market Series 1 E-Type was first registered to a Mr Ian Sommerville of Lanarkshire on October 25, 1966, at which point it was finished in black, the change to the current red livery occurring in 1979.
