I used this as an oppurtunity to practice different shading styles: cel shading, single-colour-base, and flat respectively.

I ended up coming up with an elaborate 50s AU while drawing these. Khelresse is widowed housewife who has taken up a ~life of crime~, aka the 50s!Merry Band. She’s wearing a walkaway dress, a popular style in the 50s, named because it was so quick to sew you could sew it one session and then walk away.

Kaemoque, along with a life of crime, is a semi proffessional co-respondent. In the 50s (and other time periods where there was no no-fault divorce), you could hire people to be caught having an affair with. Usually it was to protect the honour of the actual mistress, sometimes as a way to just get a divorce. Male professional co-respondents were rare, but did exist. (I definitely chose this for Kae because he’s the sort of person who would think ‘How could I get a beard and money at the same time’, and totally not because co-respondents shoes are the only interesting male 50s fashion).

I tried to draw Jas mustering sheep, but it wasn’t meant to be :(. Here’s him an Hope. In the original/cavalry version of the Merry Band, Hope was Jas’ horse.

Facts about the Merry Band that stay true no matter what AU they’re in

Zerri:

Always against her culture’s status quo, or aspects of it, and wants to convince other people it is bad

Always tries to achieve her goals through Crime(tm)

Always drags other people into her culture-changing crime-y thing

Jas:

Always has had something absurdly traumatic happen to him.

Probably rescued by the Merry Band, but it’s not a guarantee 

Had a pretty good child. Often better than the rest of the Merry Band’s, depending on the AU.

Khelresse:

Competitive and conformative

Something made her unable to conform, and caused her to join the Merry Band, but she really wants to go back to being able to conform

Kaemoque:

Has something about him that’s not obvious from the outside, but will be very very dangerous for him if it ends up being revealed.

If you are friends with him, he’ll die for you, and will expect you to do the same for him

He wouldn’t buy it, or having something make it, he’d put the raw materials and make food. Bit weird, that guy. Got in the middle of a thing between the Eaten Tongues and the Bleeding Hearts.

Poor guy learned that the avenging promise was a lil’ empty.”

“She’s a good enough wych, and a good enough teacher. She’s a solid middle of the rank crowd pleasers, and there’s a few archons she’s in favour with. In maybe a thousand years, she might break into the top two thousand.

And she beared me from her loins, taught me everything I know, et cetera.” Khelresse smiles and shrugs. Parents, huh? They’re all the same, the smile-shrug says.

“And I’m going to kill her, of course. Well, not kill her, that would be too nice. I’m going to maim her, and spare her life. You know how the Exodites say it: you reap what you sow.”

9 Kaemoque, 12 Jas, 17 Khelresse?

9. As a different species (fantasy/animal/ect.)  I drew Jas as a human, considering he’s in canon Eldar. Human!Jas would probably end up as an astropath.

12. In the world of your favorite videogame Jas is in Wizardry 8, after having murdered some Ratkin to get his hands on the Astral Dominae. (Maybe he bought it. Probably not though.) (Wizardry 8 has a weird place in my heart. It’s my favourite game, I’m full of nostalgia, and I’m filled with dread at the prospect of replaying the thing.)

I'm sure you used to have a character page around here somewhere but I can't figure out where it is? In any case, for the Eldar crew, each to one or each one to all, 3, 8, 9, 16?

 3. What do you think others like or admire about you?

Khelresse: “My fighting prowess, or course. I’m a wych, darling, kicking ass and putting on a show is what I do, and they love me for it.”

Merathera: “My cunning. Sure, that’s not why they think they like me, but it’s the real reason.”

Jas: “I can pilot. Individual people might like me for different reason, but the crew as whole? That’s the reason they keep me around. If I couldn’t, they probably would have just dumped my on a Exodite world somewhere. Not that I would mind, anywhere is better than Commoragh, but I wouldn’t be here.”

Kaemoque: “I’m not sure. People like me, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a reason, but I don’t know it.

Though if it turns out to be because I’m psychic, I am going to have to kick them in the groin. Psychically.”

8. Should all people be treated as equal, and have the same rights?

Kaemoque: “Define ‘people.’ Sure, all Eldar should be treated, the concept of nobles is silly, but mon-keigh? You can’t give them the same rights, or treat them equally. They’re not capable enough. Like, you shouldn’t be pointlessly cruel to them, but treating them as equals would also be cruel, you know? They couldn’t keep up.”

Khelresse:“Of course not! Not everyone is equal. That’s why we have nobles, trueborn, and so on. It’s sill to say people are or should be.”

Merathera: “In principal, sure. But I don’t live in the world of principals, I live here. If other people treat me right, I treat them right. If they don’t, well, I don’t care whether we’re ‘equals’ or have ‘the same rights’ or not.”

Jas: “I kind of agree with Kaemoque. Mon-keigh aren’t equal. They can’t be.

“But, they’re also sentient. They feel pain. ...I’ve felt them feel pain. Look, I’d never say we were equals, but I think me and a human both have right not to be in pain. And I’m willing to say we might share other rights too.”

9. If you committed a crime, would you accept punishment willingly?

Merathera: “No. Why would I?”

Khelresse: “Never. I wouldn’t stoop that low.”

Kaemoque: “Look, in Commoragh, my existance is a crime. Do you see me turning myself in right now? No? There’s you’re answer.”

Jas: “Unlike these people, I would, because I have *morals* and *standards.* Crimes should be punished.

“Unless the crime happened in Commoragh, in which case, no. The punishment would be disproportionate.”

16. What would you consider a fate worse than death?

Jas: “Commoragh.”

2. if you HAD to choose, who’s your favorite muse?

Rilka, probably. She’s definitely the one I’ve played the most, as she is my d&d character. And she’s so fun to play! She spouts bullshit and has no sense of self preservation, and it’s awesome.(Our party has a Reasonable Face and a Bad Idea Face, and Rilka is the Bad Idea Face.)

3. which muse is the trickiest to get into character for? 

Merathera. Her character is a little vague at the moment,  so it’s often hard to get in character when she has so little.

16. which muse is most willing to fight another muse? 

Khelresse! She fights for a living, to socialise, to put others in there place. She does it a lot.

Would you ever write enemies to lovers?

Yeah, totally! I personally prefer lovers to enemies, I like betrayal thematically (and the general poking of the audience’s hearts with a spoon). But enemies to lovers has appeal. (Though I can’t think about it without getting “What is this feeling?... LOATHING. UNADULTERATED LOATHING!” stuck in my head)

I guess anything involving my warhammer 40k fan character Khelresse and Merathera would count as enemies to lovers... if they actually stop being enemies, instead of being both which they don’t really. Closest equivalent would be the Homestuck concept of Kismessitude. (My headcanon  about Dark Eldar is that ‘How dare you hurt them, only I get to hurt them!’ is sappily romantic.)

A more proper enemies to lovers I might write would be: Celebrimbor does not like this new Maia running around his city, partially because the Maia is a lil’ suspicious, and also because Celebrimbor does not like competition at being the best at making things --> Through Annatar being just to gosh darned charming, Celebrimbor ends up coming around and they start an artistic partneship/romance --> Turns out Annatar is actually Sauron, and he’s got the One Ring now. ...So enemies to lovers to mortal enemies.

I guess the takeaway from this is I like enemies to lovers, but tend to play around with it in non standard ways.
