They were stuck in this world. This world or whatever it was named Quadratum, for the foreseeable future.
At least they were here together.
That was all Riku could have hoped for, next to finding Sora in the first place. Now that he had managed that part of his quest, the rest could be simply whatever came next. Riku knew that, be it whatever foe or evil, they would stand against it and return back to their friends waiting for them.
He didn’t, however, predict what might have come next for the two of them being less of a threat and more of a personal matter.
“I think I love you.”
Riku had taken a few more steps before stopping. The noises of the park within the enormous city faded to nothing as those continued to ring in his mind. He turned, to see if what he had heard correctly from Sora had been that. Because…there was no way that his lifelong friend and…precious person returned those feelings. He had resigned himself in knowing that they would never be shared between them. Not that he minded, much, but the ache did sometimes catch him in the middle of the night, sleepless.
The look on Sora’s face, startled at his own admission but also mustering up some bravado, told Riku that his friend had meant those words. Sora hadn’t just said them but meant them as well.
Of course, it would help Riku’s own racing heart if Sora hadn’t said it with so much unsureness in his voice.
