{where we call home: a sorikai kingdom hearts fanfic}
Time to save the worlds one more time!
They didn't think they were done, not by a long shot, but they did think they they'd get a little longer than two months to recover from two years of adventure.
Guess not.
Summoned by Mickey for a festival before another whirlwind adventure, things quickly come crashing down when a new enemy appears.
Everything isn't as it seems.
For once it's the three of them together traversing the worlds to stop Xehanort's final plan, encountering old enemies and new friends, and uncovering long lost heroes and age-old secrets that shadow the very foundation under their feet.

For @cosmiccoffeebee ! Here's a bunch of friends simply having a good time together.
AO3
Sora pouted at his friends. "Why does Kairi get a sled? All I have is Goofy and a shield."
He shivered a little against the wind. At least this time he visited, Anna arranged for them to get warmer clothing.
Kairi leaned over the railing and grinned. "The Seven Hearts have to stick together."
"Plus," Elsa added, "You already mastered the mountain with Goofy's shield."
She stood behind Kairi with Anna. The sisters would be no help, it seemed.
Kairi sat back in the sled and firmly held the reins. "Don't tell us you think you'll lose?" She raised a brow.
"Yeah right. In your dreams, Kairi."
Riku intercepted before these two bickered the day away. "I'm just glad that I'm not racing. It was getting old beating Sora at everything."
Donald squawked with laughter while Goofy patted him on the shoulder. Sora sputtered, "You did not! I won plenty of those races."
"Then put your munny where your mouth is. 100 munny that I beat you to the bottom of the mountain." Kairi put her hand out. "And loser buys hot chocolate for everyone on top of that."
Sora took a step back. "That's not fair to Goofy and Elsa. They're just here to have fun."
"Oh no, this is just between you and I. It's friendly competition, that's all." Her eyes twinkled mischievously.
Well, if she wanted a race, he'd give it to her. This would be the easiest munny he earned. Sora took her hand and shook it. "You're on."
Anna handed Riku a scarf to signal the start of the race. Kairi sat up straight and braced herself against the seat. Sora crouched against the shield.
"On your mark," Riku called.
"Hey Kairi," he said suddenly.
She looked at him with a puzzled look. "Yeah?"
"Get set."
"Good luck."
Kairi replied with a beam and, "Good luck to you too. See you at the bottom."
Riku waved down the scarf. "Go!"
Later, when Goofy helped Sora bring everyone their Oaken Hot Chocolate, he thought back to the fun he had all day with Kairi and Riku. The three of them hadn't had so much fun in, well, years.
Kairi regaled Donald with a story of how Sora navigated Goofy straight into a tree during the race. Sora winced at the memory; snow was harder to deal with than sand.
And that tree had come out of nowhere!
No one likes a sore loser, he thought to himself, and handed Kairi her mug. "Extra marshmallows for today's winner."
Sora also gave her a munny pouch. "And your winnings."
"Thanks Sora!" She grinned. "Better luck next time," Kairi added sincerely.
Riku cleared his throat and raised his own mug in a toast. "To the beginning of Kairi's winning streak, and" he paused for dramatic effect, "the continuation of Sora's losing streak."
To Sora's dismay, everyone else toasted to that. Still, he wouldn't change his friends for anything.
On the morning Seifer leaves Hayner tells him not to.
âYou make it sound so final,â Seifer laughs. The sunâs just coming up and Haynerâs been up all night but he wonât say it but Seifer knows because of course he does. âItâs three weeks. You wonât even notice Iâm gone.â
Haynerâs cute when he pouts but it also drives a hole through Seiferâs chest because more often than not these days heâs the reason for the curl of Haynerâs bottom lip, the crossing of his arms. Van tells him Haynerâs just being a whiny b-word only he used the actual word which always makes Seifer fume, because even when Haynerâs pissed heâs worth defending and itâs not Vanâs place to talk about their relationship like that when he hasnât even seen Ven in a month. Even if Seifer asks.
âScrew you,â Hayner says but his heartâs not in it. He flips onto his side, facing away from Seifer, staring at the wall.
Seifer knows itâs mostly about Demyx, but he reaches out to rub the taut muscles of Haynerâs back and asks, âIs this about Demyx?â
Still not looking at him, looking everywhere but him, Hayner rolls onto his back and shoves Seiferâs hand away. âIsnât everything nowadays?â he snaps. âAll I hear about is Demyx. Demyx this, Demyx that. Youâre always on the phone with him. And donât think I didnât catch you texting him during the movie last night. You ainât sly, Almasy.â
And usually when Hayner calls him by his surname itâs with a smirk and a soft punch to the shoulder but this time itâs like heâs disowning him.
Seifer deflates like a pricked balloon. He should be used to this by now. He should be used to the vines crawling up his throat.
Heâs not.
âWell, did you ever stop to consider that maybe, just maybe, we were planning for a long road trip? What did you expect me to do, wing it?â He tried, he really tried to keep the poison from his lips but Haynerâs obstinance is wearing him down and he thinks maybe itâll be good for us to be apart for three weeks and then he feels guilty and like he should apologize even though it was just a thought. Just a bitter bitter thought.
âOh, I donât know, maybe not go with HIM? Seriously? Youâre going to be stuck in a tiny car with your ex for three weeks. Itâs likeââ and he stops because his voice is just a little bit shaky and Seifer knows he wants to tell him how he never thinks of him, never considers his feelings but also doesnât quite believe it enough to say it.
âBabe,â Seifer says. His voice is lighter now. Itâs a gamble, calling Hayner âbabeâ when heâs mad. It either calms him down or sends him into a blind rage and Seifer still doesnât know what makes the difference. âBabe, I mean, you know Iâd never do anything, right? Heâs my friend. Donât you trust me?â
âI wouldnât even trust myself in that situation,â Hayner responds, and add that to the dartboard of knives protruding from Seiferâs chest. He wishes he could get inside Haynerâs thick skull and make him really believe, really understand that he really loves him so much he can barely breathe when theyâre fighting and would never, ever choose someone else over him. Not in a million years.
But he canât. So he just says, âWell, weâre different people,â and gets up to make breakfast.
â
They donât talk until Demyx pulls up outside the apartment. And itâs not a natural, sleepy nothing-to-say silence either. In fact Seifer would almost prefer screaming, because then at least heâd know what Hayner was thinking. But heâs too proud to be the one who talks first, so he packs up the last of his things and when he canât find his wallet he spends fifteen minutes searching for it instead of asking Hayner even though Hayner would be able to point and say âitâs thereâ and thereâs where it would be and Demyx wouldnât be revving his engine on an empty street at 7 am telling him to hurry up.
When heâs finally ready to go Haynerâs in the shower, so he figures heâll just call him from the hotel tonight and in the meantime cross his fingers. The lump in his throat stays.
âDamn, looks like someone needs a coffee!â Demyx says cheerily. Too cheerily for an early morning.
âCut me some slack,â Seifer mutters as he throws his suitcase in the trunk with more force than he intended. And then he slams it shut with more force than he intended.
âOh, shit, you good man?â
Demyxâs upbeat demeanor falls away instantly as Seifer slides in beside him.
âNot really, but I will be. Letâs just go.â
Demyx starts the engine. âNo Hayner this morning, then?â
âWhat?â Seifer asks, blinking.
âOh, yâknow. I just thought heâd like, come down and see you off or something...â
âYeah, well. Guess heâs busy. Come on, weâre losing time.â
Demyx considers him for a moment, reading the frown on his face, his crossed arms, his sleep-logged eyes.
âIf youâre sure, boss,â he says at last. One last chance. Seifer didnât want to, wasnât meaning to, but he looks back. He looks in the rearview mirror where it says in tiny white letters: OBJECTS IN MIRROR MAY BE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR. And Haynerâs standing on the steps to the apartment, not waving, not even smiling. Just standing. And fuck the mirror, fuck the tiny white text. Heâs never been farther away.
aka that time I went completely bloody insane and wrote all sorts of Kingdom Hearts and Exalted crossover character profiles with implications of plot and story but heroically refrained from inserting them into my actual Exalted tabletop game.
This was it. If Chirithy was right, then this station would lead him to Kairi, where she should be waiting for him. The world where the sky meets the sea.The final piece of the puzzle. The Final World. If everything was as it should be, then he could fix everything one last time. The fates dealt him a bad hand the first time around. What would happen if⌠No, it had to work.
Sora opened his eyes and pointed his keyblade at the image of Kairiâs heart station. He used the forbidden power one last time and The Kingâs warning echoed in his mind one more time, but just as he did then, he ignored it. The stakes were too high to quit now. The Power of Awakening was the only way forward.
He allowed himself to flow into the beam of light. The warmth surrounded him as he traveled to the Final World. A hand grasped his own. Kairi, he thought. Sora could not open his eyes until his feet touched the ground. A part of his heart was afraid that he was hallucinating again. All of his doubts fled when he heard her slight gasp.
It was fortuitous timing that he did open his eyes or he would have missed the pure wonderment on Kairiâs face when she took in the Final World.
âItâs so pretty,â she breathed.
Sora could barely believe it. Her hand was in his, and she stood right next to him. He wanted to pull her into his arms, but feared that if he broke the moment, he might wake up. After all, Chirithy said that sleep touched this realm more often than not.
âKairi?â He hoarsely said. âIs it really you?â
She turned her smile toward him, and she giggled. âOf course it is, silly. Iâm always with you, remember?â
He set free the breath he had been holding deep inside. This wasnât a dream. Kairi was here. She was safe. Thatâs all that mattered.
The only thing that mattered.
With that thought, he sobered. âKairi, I have something that I need to tell you.â
Her brow furrowed. âWhat is it?â she asked gently.
He pulled out her lucky charm from his pocket. âIâve made you a lot of promises, and until now, I havenât kept my word. I promised that I would keep you safe, that I would bring back your lucky charm. And then-â his voice broke at the memory of the Keyblade Graveyard. A tear fell down his cheek.
Kairi wiped it away. âYouâve kept every promise. As long as you come back to me, youâve been true to your word.â
âIt doesnât matter. Iâm here to fix everything.â
âSora, youâre not making sense,â she pleaded.
He closed her hands around the charm and stepped away. âYouâre going home, safe and sound.â The space between them was short, but it felt like they were separated once again by the sea.
Kairi sobbed, thankfully understanding what he meant. Saying it out loud would give life to the inevitable. She wrapped her arms around his torso and pressed her face into his shoulders.
âEvery time I find you, you slip away again.â
Sora did not respond. Instead, he looked up at the sky, hoping that she couldnât see his tears. He needed to be strong for her.
âHow long do we have?â Kairi sniffled.
âI donât know,â he admitted. âI just know that itâs not much.â
âDo you think,â her voice hitched, âwe could go back to the island one more time? This place is beautiful, but thereâs nothing that can compare to a sunset.â
Sora nodded. Whatever she wished for, he would grant. He only wished that he could tell her everything he had in his heart. Maybe one day he would.Â
After all, it only takes a moment to let hearts connect. What was one last sunset to them?
Sora asks his brothers for romantic help. What he gets is teasing, bad advice, worse advice, and surprisingly good advice in that order. Will any of this help him get his first kiss?
AO3
In a perfect world, Sora would have first kissed Kairi when they exchanged the paopu. In a less perfect world, they found each other, and their lips crashed together desperately. In an even adequate world, he might have done it one of the dozens of times he had seen her since their reunion.
Unfortunately for Sora, he did not reside in any of those worlds. He didnât even know where they were. Had he a clue, he would have hopped on the first Gummi with Kairi to that world.
Ah, Kairi. He laid his head back on the grass. How could he describe her? Her glowing eyes pierced deep into his soul. Her laugh warmed his heart on the darkest of days. Even when she was annoyed, she was adorable; she scrunched her nose and furrowed her brow. Sora needed to work on his distraction when that happened, unless he wanted her annoyance directed at him one day.
It would still be a few more days until he returned to Destiny Islands and Kairi. Until then, he was staying at the Land of Departure with his brothers as a favor to Aqua. She, Terra, and Riku were with the King and Master Yen Sid on âofficial businessâ. He counted down the days.
Sora felt the thumps on the ground next to him. One on each side.
âWhat are you mooning about now?â Roxas groaned.
Ven reached over Sora to smack him. âNot what. Whooo?â He drew out. âHeâs obviously thinking about Kairi again.â
He and Roxas laughed, and Sora felt the blush creep up his neck. He shot up quickly. âYou donât understand whatâs happening.â
Roxas rose up on his elbow. âTry me.â He had his own share of romantic problems right now.
Sora jumped up and began pacing. âItâs just that⌠Well⌠Kairi and I havenâtâŚkissed.â
His brothers popped up like daisies. âNo way!â They shouted simultaneously. Sora would have been annoyed at their incredulity if not for the loud howl that escaped one of the castle windows.
Before he realized it, a dark portal appeared and out came Vanitas, shaking his head and cackling. âYouâve got to be kidding me! You shared a paopu with her. Isnât that more intimate than smacking lips?â The blush that started on his neck went up to Soraâs ears now.
âAs much as I hate to say it, and you know I do, Vanitas has a point. Is there a reason it hasnât happened yet?â Ventus asked calmly. If the difference between him and Vanitas was not physically enough, their personalities did the job.
âCircumstances. Iâd like to believe that. There are so many times that would have been perfect.â He dropped his head in hands.
Roxas placed a hand on his shoulder. âHey, thereâs no time line for this. No need to rush.â
âI want it to be memorable,â he said firmly. He glanced at his brothers. âAny suggestions?â
âTake her to Disney Castle and kiss her under the fireworks,â Ventus offered. He pulled Sora toward him. âDance with Kairi in the moonlight and twirl her around.â With a spin, he flung him out and Roxas caught him.
âPlan for a dinner at Le Grand Bistrot. We can serenade her for you as you steal a kiss in the candlelight.â Roxas prepared to dip him when Vanitas grabbed him by the shoulders and yanked him away.
âUgh, you two are useless. Shut up,â Vanitas directed to the blonds. He turned Sora to face him straight on. âHereâs a few facts for you. Kairi is crazy about you. You are crazy about her. Youâve been to the ends of the universe for each other. She. Chose. You. Not a perfect moment or event to remember. Kairi is here for the good and the bad. Even if your first kiss isnât special, it doesnât matter. Being with someone isnât one special moment. Itâs sharing all of them.â
The tears welled up in his eyes as Sora suddenly hugged him. âThanks Vani.â
Vanitas groaned and begrudgingly returned it. âJust donât call me that, and weâre even.â He groaned again when Roxas and Ven joined in on the hug.
When they broke apart a few moments later, Roxas posed an important question. âHow do you know so much about relationships anyway?â
âWouldnât you like to know, pipsqueak?â He sneered, turning away.
As the boys began arguing once more, Sora sneaked away to his Gummi. Sorry Aqua, he thought, but I need to go see a special lady.
â
He sent her the message as soon as he returned. Now leaning against the wall of the Secret Place, he waited. He heard her footsteps echo through the narrow cave opening. Sora took in her sight, and always, was in awe by her.
âSora!â She called out, running into the open space. âIs everything okay? You werenât due back for a few days.â
âIâm fine, donât worry,â he said, taking her hand. âDo you know how much I hate this cave?â He asked quietly.
Kairi shook her head. âWhy do you hate it?â He saw her glance at their picture in the corner.
He sighed. âYou probably donât remember, but it was right here that I saw your body disappear in front of me. I thought you were gone.â His voice cracked on that final word.
She cupped his face in her hands. âBut I am right here. See?â
He couldnât help but smile at her earnest face. âStill, with your permission, Iâd like to make a new, better memory here.â He took her hands and tugged her close. With a deep breath, in, out, and in, he asked, âCan I kiss you?â
Kairi gasped a little laugh and sobered. âYes,â she breathed. He closed the short distance between them and gently placed his lips on hers. She met him back with full force. (Was it just him, or was there the scent of paopu in the air?)
After a few moments, he pulled away, and she grinned. âIâve been waiting for that.â
Sora pouted. âWhy didnât you say anything then?â
Kairi raised a hand in mock offense. âThe paopu was my idea. I expected you to initiate something in our relationship,â she said with a smirk.
It was his turn to grin. âI didnât realize we had given it a title.â
Now she tugged him close by the collar of his shirt. âWe donât need titles. I promised to be a part of your life. No.â She kissed him once. âMatter.â Twice. âWhat.â Three times.
âBe mine,â Sora sighed and melted into one more kiss.
