Vanikai / Toy swords AU

Comic roughs that will be staying roughs. I got gripped by this AU out of left. TLDR some bs vanitas is still around and forced to behave. He realizes Kairi was pretty much set up to fail. More yapping under the cut (formatted from a twt thread, forgive potential jank)

I like to think that in all these AUs where Vanitas gets to stick around and ends up having to behave, he doesn't just hiss and spit like a stray cat. He's more interesting as a character than that to me. I also think Kairi was set up to fail, and I'll die on that hill because her 'training' was done by Mister Grasshopper Legs who had even less experience with a keyblade, and wasn't even able to look at her and see her.

I think that would hit something in a calmer Vanitas who has been away from Xehanort for a few years. Something something, they were both basically destined to fail because of their similar circumstances (never the first choice).

I also think initially, he would offer to train Kairi to piss Riku off. There's bad blood everywhere, and this would come off as such a nice gesture that Riku (and anyone else really) would look like the asshole taking issue with it.

But really, Vanitas would respect Kairi enough to not pull punches. It's just that, not treating her with baby gloves does mean giving her the same force he would give anyone else he views as an equal. And that is femur shattering force.

He trains her with that intensity that makes her realize she can't keep trying to pretend things don't ever need to change, and that she does need to accept that things are and will be different and can never go back to "how they were", which is what held her back. She locks the fuck in, spars with him as much as her mana will allow her to continue healing herself, and eventually she successfully lands some pretty hefty hits on him.

Then continues to dodge and parry him from there, for a fair shake. The big ol sparkly eyes she'd give him when he tells her she's done good and that she's come a long way, which he may well just say from observation not necessarily intended praise, would be cute as fuck frankly. I think at that stage would be when Vanitas opens up with her more, because now he isn't just inevitably breaking her bones, just taking longer to get to it each time.

He's not an emotionally closed off person despite what the fandom seems to think. his whole deal is that he IS outwardly emotional. So once he's settled in with her presence, I don't think he would be keeping many secrets. Tells her about his time with Xehanort, and she returns with her stories about her loneliness. He talks about how he lives as a failed weapon. She speaks of how Sora forgets about her so often, but Vanitas never has. He's always there to spar when he says he'll be. And she really, really appreciates that.

I like the idea they spar as a 'love language' eventually. And that Vanitas doesn't desire to be the dominating force between the two of them because she's proven well enough she can stand beside him, and she no longer just has to follow along and hope for the best. It's also nice to not feel like he has to be an aggressive force just to feel safe somewhere, as evidenced by the fact he can feel fear in powerlessness when he has no safety net. Kairi allows a vulnerability to show through that he hasn't accepted in a long time.

Of course this is all based on character studies of characters with very finite time in the spotlight, and famously Kairi is done…quite dirty. But I did want to use that for something productive and as a character trait in itself to see what could be done with it.

And I am quite fond of this AU, even if i end up fleshing it out less romantically than originally intended.

It's called Toy Swords AU both because of their training weapons being wooden, and as a descriptor for them as people in the context of their situation and how others viewed them. Because I like to be mean.
