Marina "Masha" Orlov - The Thorny Rose
The Rose (General)
Marina is what most would describe a rich girl. As one of the heirs to the Orlov name, she and her brother Alexander belong to the upper class in russia. She is versed in many skills and showcases a wide variety of knowledge that she was taught from very young age on. But with such a childhood comes of course a lot of life lessons that she was taught as early as possible. Trust no one. Get rid of whoever stands in your way, before they even know they are. Marina became a coldhearted manipulator as young as 5 years old. Her schemes and plans didn't even spare her own family, as she is suspected to have poisoned her parents at age 13. And after she had been suspected of their murder for over a year she finally came back to society. Though not in russia but in japan, as a new student at Namimori Middle School.
She is a mean girl through and through, using her charm, good looks, influence and wealth to come out on top. She truly doesn't believe that there is true kindness, as people always only want to be the dominant one in the room. This makes her pick fights with basically everyone at any moment if she feels like it is apporpriate and would help her. She may not forget someone else doing something nice for her but it will not stop her from eliminating others in her way. Bully them before they can bully you. Establish yourself as the queen so nobody can touch you. And even if life at the top is lonely, she never has to fear of falling off. She knows she was born into these Circumstances. Of course she knows it.
The sapling (Backstory)
Marinas story doesn't start with her birth but actually with a love brewing between a young Vassiley Orlov and the daughter of his families chaufeur. The girl was a bit of a wild card. She had a lot of energy and drive, a lot of love to give, but also a lot of love for herself, so she would not be shy of defending herself. Despite this the two children became good friends and a young romance began to blossom between them. His feelings for Nalia were true and pure but he was unable to be with her due to their different social standings. Eventually he bowed to his parents wish to marry a daughter from an even richer family, joining them together into an even wealthier Orlov name. The woman would give birth to a boy, who would grow up to become Alexander Orlov.
Through all this time, Vassiley kept contact to Nalia, seeking for the love he once felt for her and eventually it comes as it has to. Vassiley cheats on his wife with Nalia and his love becomes pregnant with a child. This child would become Marina Orlov. But this little couplement would not be hidden from Madame Orlov. She confronts her husband about the affair, but before he can even explain herself, she offers him a trade. They will take in the child under the Orlov name. She would grow up in luxury and wealth, with all doors open to her. This should be a far better deal for the child than her growing up in poverty by a single mother with no education. When asked why she wished for such a strange occurance the woman would simply tell her husband that she did not wish to become pregnant once more, but realized that the family needed more than one single child. To forgo the strain of a second pregnancy, she was willing to take another womans child under her roof and raise her as her own. When confronted with this opportunity, Nalia could hardly argue against the opportunity, though she wished for one thing in return. She wished to become both childrens caretaker. A nanny.
Nalia moved into the estate, becoming the childrens caretaker, showing especially a lot of love to Masha. Alex always saw Nalia as nothing more than a servant. He clung to his mother, and treated Nalia like a stranger. The exact opposite happened to Marina. She felt safe and loved by Nalia, while she felt abandoned and scorned by her "mother". Nalia would try to do the best for her daughter, trying to impart important lessons into her like standing up for herself and not bowing down to others. "A rose as beautiful as it is, has thorns to protect itself. Do not forget that you are a rose. Never forget that, my dear Masha."
Eventually the day came, Marina was 10 years old and became accostumed to calling Nalia "Mama" even if she asked Marina to never call her that openly in front of others. But in a fight with her mother, Marina eventually says out loud that she sees Nalia as more of a mother than the woman. She loses her composure and slaps Marina hard across the face before she storms out of the room. Marina who believed that she had to stand up for herself took some moments to calm herself before she ran after her, only to stop in her tracks when she heard the woman yell at her father Vassiley. And what she heard was the truth. About how Marina was a horrible child, a spawn of "that woman" and how "that woman" was putting Marina against her, who should be the only "mother" for Marina. About how Marina calling Nalia her "mama" would make people gossip and speculate. About how Nalia was becoming too dangerous and needed to be disposed of.
In fear, Marina ran to Nalias room, crying and hysteric, trying to warn her about the impending punishment. Nalia could hardly understand the stressed and hysteric babbling but eventually she heard Vassiley yell for her and knew something was up. She hid Masha in her closet and told her to be quiet no matter what happens. Just as she turned around to leave her room Vassiley barged into her room, stressed, shaking and with a revolver drawn. Immideatly she tried to talk her way out of the situations, hands raised, appealing to his humanity. He hesitated, cried, said there was no other way. They spoke back and forth, what about Marina? She would be well taken care of, she wouldn't miss anything in the world. What about their love? Love would never be strong enough to change society, people would never accept her as his beloved. And after minutes passed, the woman barged into the room, trying to physically force Vassiley to shoot, when
BANG
A shot fired and hit Nalia in the chest. In shock Vassiley let go of the gun, only for the woman to take it up and shoot 3 more times. She yelled about what an eyesore Nalia hat been, how much she despised her and her demon spawn. Marina sat silent in the closet, hearing it all, seeing her mother slowly die on the beautiful carpet. The woman left to get people who would "clean up the mess" and Marina watched her father sink to the ground next to Nalias body and lament that it had gotten this far. That he even fell in love with Nalia and doomed her to this fate. Marina watched her father lay his lips on Nalias, crying and sobbing, before a few lackeys came and disposed of Nalias body and removed the carpet. Marina stayed in that closet for hours until finally the room was empty for a few minutes and she managed to sneak out. When she was approached the next day she played innocent and unknowing, just saying she was upset over the slap she recived. As subtle as she could she asked about Nalia and was told that she was caught stealing and had to be let go.
Masha knew that was a lie. Of course she knew.
For 3 years Masha would plan her revenge. She would play nice and the perfect daughter. She would seem so normal albeit a bit too intelligent for her own good. And on her 13th birthday, she gets into a fight with her brother. It's so harsh she bans him from the property and her parents relent, sending him out of the house until midnight. Through a rather carefully planned scheme she ends up helping to prepare dinner for her and her parents, subtly putting two seperate chemicals into the food and the wine. Alone the substances are harmless, combined however they become deadly. And as she watches her parents eat, she asks to have a toast together with the wine. They clunk their glasses and as both take their sips, she watches.
The chemicals react and as the woman and her father start to retch and gasp for air, she calmly takes a sip of her own unaltered wine, watching as the woman collapses first on the table. She quietly gets up, as her father falls from his chair gasping, panting and shaking, walks over to the woman and confirms that she's dead. She turns to her father and calmly walks over to him. He only has a few more moments, but as he looks up into Marinas face, he realizes that she must know the truth. In his last moments he apologizes in tears, begging god for forgiveness.
"Did you ever even believe me to be your daughter?"
"Not any less than your brother. You'll always be my girl, Masha. You'll always be an Orlov. Not once did I doubt it."
He dies on the ground. just a few moments before Alex returns home and finds their dead bodies.
Masha immideatly gets into the investigation crossfire. For one whole year she is detained. Despite the clear cut case, it's hard to find substantial evidence that is more than circumstantial. Eventually they have to let her go and under the order of the Igorevich family she is relocated to Namimori for the time being. Sasha follows her to keep an eye on his "lunatic of a sister" and so Marina Vassilevna becomes a student at Namimori Middle School.
The Sprout (Skills)
Marina is not just incredibly intelligent, having skipped a class in her youth, but also very calculating. She was raised in high society, so things like dancing, singing, playing instruments and other cultural aspects are ingrained in her. Manners, dresscode, behavior, it has all been polished. She knows how to navigate difficult situations and doesn't shy away from using her acting abilities to her utmost. She doesn't trust anyone but herself so she is always on guard and very observant. Aside of these skills she has aquired quite a vast knowledge of poisons in her journey to execute revenge. She is athletic and skilled, almost seeming superhuman with her assets.
The blossom (Fighter)
When it comes to actual combat, Marina can definitely shine with her masterful fencing and flexibility. She has perfect form, maybe a bit stiff, but good enough to protect herself. Her TYL counterpart shows also a mastery over illusions, being a Mist Flame user as her brother Alexander. In the future she also took up marksmanship so she could widen her skillset.
The Rose and the Magpie (Masha and Sasha)
When it comes to Mashas relationship to her brother there is not much positive to say, considering that they were always at odds. Alex has a very typical only child demeanor and hates being around Marina, as he sees her as an annoying nuisance. It only got worse after her murder of his parents. Since what she saw happen that fateful day is a secret to her alone, Sasha was left in the believe that Masha found out about her birth mother being a commoner and wanted to off their parents before they changed their testament, claiming him as the sole heir. In his eyes she is a shallow and malicious person with no redeeming qualities that will even kill for money.
When it comes to Mashas feelings for her brother its not dissimilar. She sees him as a misogynistic, condecending asshole who sees women, poor people and whoever he deems fit as less than him. She absolutely despises the way he orbits around Rena and won't leave her alone, not because of sympathy but because it is in her eyes his worst version. But to say she truly hates him is a stretch. She definitely dislikes him and doesn't get along with him, but never does she ever say that she hates him. She hated his parents, but she never hated him.
Once Masha finally shares her secret of witnessing what happened to Nalia, he becomes a lot more empathetic to her and softer, showing real compassion and brotherly love towards his sister. While he will never forgive her, he is still shocked to see the true colours of his parents. Could she be lying? Yes, of course, but Sasha has lived so long with Marina that he can tell her truths from her lies rather easily.
The Same Flower, But Different Colour (Masha in Reborn! Next->)
A lot of Mashas relationship towards Rena changes depending on verse. She is a lot less abjectly horrible and nasty to Rena in Reborn! Next-> on the ground that Mashas biggest problem with Rena is her believing that Rena was pretending to be kind and generous, when Marina has deeply internalized that there is nobody among high society who could possibly be so naive and stupid. So Renas entire personality is a farce and a lie to her.
In Reborn! Next-> however, Rena runs away from her life in russia. She throws wealth, security and family away, because the strain is too much for her. This shows Marina that Rena might've been truly a kind person stuck in a terrible environment and Marina deeply admires Rena for her decision. That's why, in Renas hour of need, when she is to be married off to some guy who sees her as nothing but an object, held basically at gunpoint, Marina and Sasha both stand by Renas side to protect her as her knights. While Sasha does this because of his infatuation with Rena, Marina does it soley because of the Orlov loyalty to the Igorevich family. She is confronted by the fake Renas Mother if that shouldn't mean that she follows the orders of the current Igorevich heads, but she argues that she only fights for the safety and happieness of the next generation, aka Rena.
After Rena is saved it is Masha who helps clean up things in russia and finally eases Renas worries about the future of the family, by promising to support the family as the Orlov have done for generations now.

Yeah Masha has become a silent fave of mine. I just can't stop it orz But yeah I hope I get to talk more about her because she is slowly developing into a really fun character. Don't get me wrong, she is aweful and will read you for filth, but she gets better the more she is around genuine people. Hell I even dabbled in the idea of exploring her in combo with Ryohei because I feel like those two could be a really funny combo.
Doing some Masha trace sketches to get her vibe down, using some amazing Art by one of my favourite Artist RAHWIA, animator and artist for the Royal Scandal Series
Masha has definitely traits and similarities with Rosetta so I tried to emulate that. Despite originally wanting her to be quite one note, Masha is truly turning into a quiet fave of mine, I would actually love to explore more. Maybe I should write her story up... who knows.
in any case, Masha is here to stay and so is her brother Sasha. Tho I am a lot less kinder to him than to her.

(First of all: thank you for always sending something in, Lalo. I see it and appreciate it. Just got a lot going on right now. But I WILL get to your stuff. I always look forward to answering these, I just don't find the time for it often and I am so sorry about that orz But here we go!)
Sergey & Asuna
12 - What interests/hobbies would they have in common?
When Asuna and Sergey first met each other it was at school when she tried to naively just make aquaintances with this guy that constantly scowls and glares. Fed up by her happy go lucky demeanor as if there was ANYTHING to smile about he read her for filth, without even knowing her and left. The second time they meet is a lot different. Unbeknownst to Sergey he had been throwing hoops right where she lives and so she witnessed him beat up the older kids who came to seek trouble with him. Being an avid basketball enthusiast herself she approached him when he was on the court again, challenging to a game.
They bonded over a mutual respect for each others skills in the sport, which might explain why Ser got pissed when she decided to switch to Volleyball. If you think about it, their interests and hobbies don't align that much aside of that one sport. Mostly because Sergey had given up on anything and everything. Even Basketball was less a passion and more a way to kill time for him. So there wasn't exactly something he COULD bond over with her. He was a nothing person and she felt that.
That's probably the reason Asuna decided to stick around and get Ser out of his shell, even roping in Leo, because when Leo is in on it, Ser follows. And so they just did things teenagers did. Go out exploring the town, check out new food vendors, watching movies at the cinema. Chilling at a lokal pond, she even gets them to go to museums, where Sergey displays an intrinsic understanding of art. It doesn't matter so much what their specific hobbies are, as all the things they experience together on the journey of reanimating Sergey.
19 - Do they have any fears or set backs in terms of relationships?
Asuna is a simple girl. She grew up mostly in japan before she had to move so her exposure with relationships was mostly anime, manga and TV dramas. Albeit a few of her friends back in japan had short dating phases, she always knew it was nothing serious, because, well they were 10. So her views on a romantic relationship are very very pure. That when you date someone it should be with the intention of staying together, of maybe having a future down the line. Physical touches especially anything thats more than a hug seems almost scandalous! Unless of course it's in friendship! But with someone she gets dokis for? unimaginable! If asked what her fears and worries were then she'd easily say the cultural differences and her discomfort with physical touches that are clearly meant non platonic. Even if she knows Sergey would never do that to her, she more freezes up when someone else gets to close and often she fears this might send the wrong message to not only the person persuing her but also the guy she ACTUALLY likes.
Sergey is a lot lot lot more cynical. He doesn't believe in love full stop. He was desillusioned way too much by the acts of his own father, who seemed to impregnate women and then just leave them alone. He saw his older sisters have trouble with guys coming onto them too strongly or objectifying them, especially in Jingyis case, who was only seen as the cute asian girl. Maybe that is why he gets so quickly protective of Asuna who seems to have similar things happening to her. He doesn't believe he is capable of love, and to be fair, sex never interested him. So imagine his shock when after deliberation, mulling it over and even asking his sisters for advice he comes to the conclusion that he must have a crush, maybe even more, for Asuna. It's easy to denounce love when you aren't in love yourself. But when it hits you, even though you believe in it's futility, then panic sets in. Sergey doesn't want to lose Asuna. That much he fully understands. But he is way too scared to approach their friendship with any intent of making it more. He tries to keep his distance. Tries to play it cool and casual, but he feels himself betray his fears. He notices he lights up when she is around. How light he feels when she is being silly, how he WANTS to make her smile and happy--- hell... he wants to be BETTER because of her. It's terrifying. And just when he is ready to give into these feelings and overcome his fear of being heartbroken down the line
she looses her life.
25 - Try and think of either 3 silly or angsty headcanons for them as a couple? Depending on the dynamic of the ship, could be anything at all. If you cant think of 3, thats fine.
3 ways Asuna has influenced Sergey and 3 ways he has influenced her
Sergey used to approach people with the certainty that everyone deep down is a corrupt and aweful person. That only those who've seen the abyss are even capable of true warmth and compassion. Through Asunas influence he starts to change his views a bit. Yes, maybe some people didn't have to walk through hell in their live, but that doesn't make them evil. Many people will be compassionate and helpful when they are confronted with peoples pain.
Sergey left his basketball club because he couldn't stand enjoying the sport while his best friend was suffering, fighting for his life in the hospital. The realisation that nobody seemed to care about the horrors in the world and just kept on enjoying their daily life was incomprehensible for him. It got so far, he even tried to prevent Leo from picking up sports again. It's Asuna who calls him out for it and it leads to the friends finally having a proper talk about all the trauma they've been through, with their love for each other prevailing over all. Even though he doesn't officially return to his team he helps them out and trains with them. It's a small step but it's something
One of the biggest moments for Sergeys shift as a person was their classes "Show your home" project. The school being focused on immigrant children, their italian course assignment was to make a 30 minute presentation about some aspect of their home. It's to help the children still connect with their place of origin, but also learn how to share this with others in italian. Many picked their favourite dishes or holidays, with the usual short descriptive sentances you'd expect from such assignments. Sergey himself refused to even work on a presentation, because he believed the whole thing to not just be performative, but also pointless. Nobody cares about someone elses origin, this is stupid. But Asuna was deeply invested. Not only did she keep asking really interesting questions in every presentation, she made it clear that this was out of genuine interest for different cultures and not a ploy to get someone a better or worse grade. Even the shyest student would try to explain aspects they clearly felt passionate about even if the language barrier made it difficult. Asuna showed that this wasn't just a school assignment, but a real cultural exchange. And it all culminates in the way she holds her own presentation. Dolled up in a Yukata, she actually prepared their classroom to resemble something she personally loves most about japan. The O-Matsuri. Festivals with food stalls, firework shows, Taiko Drums and Gamebooths. Of course the presenation goes a lot longer than 30 minutes and the kids are excited to try out different foods and games she helped prepare with Leo and Sergeys sisters. Ser is so floored by her genuine passion to share something so personal and important with others, without even considering what she'd do if people ridiculed her for it. And despite his previous pessimistic views, Ser sees Asuna put way too much effort into a simple school presentation, laying her honest feelings bare for all to see and instead of trampling over it, everyone celebrates the moment. She clearly doesn't do it for a good grade, but because this gives her a chance to tell others what she loves about her home. And it was received warmly and genuinely well. Which eventually leads Sergey to ask their teacher to give him one more week to prepare his presentation. She's done it. Sergey is willing to try and open up. He is willing to share again and be hopeful for the future. Unfortunately he never gets to share.
The cultural differences between japan and italy are not to be understated. Social norms and cues are very different and even though Asuna has lived there already a year, she still falls into a few traps. Sergey believes she was caught again when she tells him that she joined their local volleyball club, because they saw her play in a friendly game the first time and decided she had the talent for the sport. It actually gets so on his nerves he distances himself from her and avoids her. It's thanks to Leo who gives Ser a reality check that he decides to maybe, possibly, perhaps, hypothetically go and check out one of her games. Even though it is only the preliminaries, the club doesn't do too well. Turns out Volleyball and Basketball are very different sports after all, and as the Setter of the team, Asuna feels lost on the field. That is until Sergey loudly tells her to snap out of her stupor. She is a fantastic Point Guard in Basketball, a position that also needs her to coordinate attacks and decide plays. "You're a Point Guard, aren't you?! Act like one!" is all it needs for her to regroup. Their team takes a time out, and with new conviction they get back into the game, with a clea r change in Asuna and the way she plays. Instead of trying to BECOME a good setter she analyzes her issues in setting and tries to coordinate with people to find a solution of how to set for everyone without having to force them into positions they're bad in. She focuses more on working well with her team, that the pressure of winning doesn't weigh her down anymore and she manages to come into her role. Leo however will not ever let Sergey live down that he pulled such a mangaesque stunt. It even goes as far as Sergey looking up sports culture in japan, finding out that there are small good luck charms in farm of omamori pouches of which he decides to actually make one himself. Just before the team goes to a tournament he manages to throw the omamori to Asuna across the street and tells her to give it her all. It's all the push she needs.
When it comes to these cultural differences it also brings up the fact that Asuna is not a japanese among japanese anymore but a foreigner and someone who attracts sometimes the worst glances. While her spunky genki nature is something that makes her likable, it is also something that clashes with what teenagers perceived to be the common ettiquette. Coming in with the same friend making energy she had in japan doesn't work and it causes Asuna to time and time again stand there with noone by her side. Nobody but Sergey, because he refuses to participate in the whole spiel for his own reasons. It's thanks to Sergeys albeit blunt commentary on her behavior during them being partnered up in school that she actually makes strides in adapting to the new environment. In fact, her cheerful nature and genuine kindness makes the other kids open up more and be a lot more childish and silly, disregarding how uncool that might seem. All she needed was someone to tell her what's up.
One of the sweetest things that happens in their brief friendship is probably Asunas birthday, which Asuna is very excited to celebrate. It's Leo who eventually tells her that coincidentally it falls on the same date Sergeys birthday is. Birthday twinsies, as Asuna says. But it also makes her realize that nobody else has even mentioned Sergey to her. She tries to organize a bigger event and put their birthday parties together but she clearly underestimated how much Sergey really did not like other people. But after he told her clearly all he wants is good food and to spend the day with people he cares about she realizes that she might've tried to impose her view of a great birthday on him. So she asks his sisters and Leo to help her in preparing a small grill picknic by a lake in the evening. Sergey is first sceptical about the whole thing but in the end he relaxes and openly thanks Asuna, giving her a rare but very genuine smile.

"See? It looks great on you!" Her laugh was a messy giggle, the cocktail already working it's magic, making Renas cheeks flush as she closed the cap on her red lipstick. That gave Hayato an idea. "Okay, new game. If I win, I'll kiss you all over and you're not allowed to wipe it off until tomorrow." His voice was half a whisper, a faint note of rum in his breath. He really didn't care much for the red lipstick she put on him. He was a man of his words and he had lost their last little competition. This was her prize. Him in her red lipstick. Her cheeks flushed more and she seemed to deliberate before she nodded. "Deal." She said confidentally and he was unable to hold back a grin. Oh he got her now. "You're on!"

Soooo I got great news! I got a sort of job offer from the theater I work at to take over a new childrens group, which I will be paid for. It's not much, but this is the first time I will be able to make money on my own without my mothers financial influence. So I decided to celebrate by treating myself to some art!
I traced a picture from a Manga I am currently infatuated with (My Love Story with Yama-kun at Lvl 999) and while drawing it made me think of this scenario. Drunk, engaged Hayarena, spending a night in with drinks and little games. And yes I know I just talked about Rena cutting her hair, but the decision to add the rings was last minute and by then she already had long hair. In any case, Hayatos rings after his vongola gear upgrade are a bit hard to discern but I tried my best to come up with something. And yes, Rena is wearing the Igorevich ring as a memento of her family and past.
Reborn! Now! - Profiles: The Orlov Siblings
The Orlov Family has been a very long line of wealthy merchants, dabling in trades with the russian mafia for a few generations. They are regarded as high society and modern nobels, showing off their wealth during banquets and being in an alliance with the Igorevich family for two generations now.
Marina "Masha" Vasilevna Orlov
Marina, usually only refered to as "Masha" is the younger of the two siblings by 1.5 years. She is regarded as incredibly beautiful and stylish, doning brand fashion all the time. She is snooty and two faced, using her charms and good looks to get what she wants and if that doesn't help, she will use threats and her families power to get her wishes. She can not stand Rena, as she sees her kindness as fake and unbearable, becoming a certified hater of her, despite the close relations of their families. It's why she immideatly seems to gun for Gokudera in an attempt to rile up Rena and tries to seed doubt in Tsunas belief in her, through spilling secrets and spreading rumors. She is a formidable fencer and sees people with no money as ridiculous and beneath her. She only accepted to come to namimori as a mean to torment Rena otherwise she would've never agreed to going to a public school with such a heineous dresscode.
Alexander "Sasha" Vasilev Orlov
Despite being the older sibling, Alexander, usually refered to as Alex or Sasha, isn't exactly the kind and protective brother type. In fact, he feels insanely annoyed by Masha most of the time and regularly fights with her. He had originally planned to come to Namimori alone, as his family had plans to officially engage him with Rena, but upon hearing Rena would be there, Masha decided to involve herself as well. He is overly chivalrous to the point of being mysoginistic and is a damn headache for Dima because of how physical he can be with Rena. He is very intelligent and intellectual, remembering Hayato from his childhood where he already disliked him which only fuels his hatred for the guy who dared to leave Rena. He believes women are beautiful flowers made of the finest and thinnest glass, needing protection but also subservience at every corner, which can be incredibly aggravating. He definitely sees himself as "better" than regular people due to his high intelligence, verse in different cultural aspects and the money of his family.
