Mukhali (or Muqali) was one of Chinggis Khan's greatest generals, who took over control of the campaign in North China as Chinggis turned his attention to Khwarezmia. Mukhali efforts in China in this time are phenomenal in almost every aspect, from the numbers he worked with (and against) to the distances he covered and cities he took, earning himself a fine reputation and becoming Chinggis' viceroy and most trusted general, never once losing a battle no matter the odds. Not bad for a man who had once been a slave. Unfortunately, Mukhali died in 1223 from illness, cutting his spectacular career short. Another of the famous Mongol generals, Jebe was introduced to Chinggis Khan by shooting his horse out from under him in battle. After the battle (the battle of Koyiten, 1201) he joined Chinggis, taking the name of Jebe, meaning arrow. He became on of Chinggis' most loyal generals and was instrumental in the invasion of the Jin Empire and the Khwarezmian Empire, before mysteriously dying during he and Subutai's raid past the Caucasus... At least, that was the case until some excellent historical work from Stephen Pow, who in his article "The Last Campaign and Death of Jebe Noyan,” was able to show that Jebe was most likely killed in combat with Kipchak-Russian forces a few days before the battle on the Kalka. Leading a small force to observe the enemy, they suddenly fell upon Jebe's group. Unable to beat them back, the Mongols hid Jebe in a Kipchak Kurgan, hoping to return for him. Unfortunately, the Kipchaks spotted the trick, uncovered him and executed him. Pow hypothesizes that the embarrassing nature of Jebe's death led to pro-Mongol writers leaving it out as a sign of respect to his family. Pow is even able to suggest the actual day Jebe Noyan died on: Tuesday, May 23rd, 1223. Shah Muhammad II in all his glory. I had a lot of fun drawing this one and was rather pleased with it. I like to think I captured Muhammad II's self assurance, which of course he lost as soon as Chinggis Khan disintegrated the Khwarezmian Empire.
