Chapter 328: The Exchange (Pt. 2)
“What the hell, mom?” Theresa said as they entered their suite at the hotel in Luxor. “Were you trying to get us killed?”
“Of course not,” Ruth said. “But you don’t understand what’s at stake here! I had to keep possession of the scroll at all costs!”
Theresa rolled her eyes.
“Just like always, your work is more important than keeping yourself – or me – safe,” she snapped. “Good god, mom, I had Stephanie with me! She could have been killed!”
“I’m fine, Ter,” Stephanie said, turning to Ruth. “What’s so important about the scroll anyway?”
“Not here,” Ruth said, looking around suspiciously. “We need to get out of here now. They’ll be searching for us, and this is the first place they’ll look. I know a place we’ll be safe, but we’ve got to leave now.”
“Okay, okay,” Theresa replied, finally spooked. “Let us grab our things.”
An hour later, the three had taken a taxi to a small house on the outskirts of Luxor. Ruth had insisted on leaving the rental car behind, calling it “too easy to track.”
“We should be safe here for the moment,” Ruth said. “No one knows about this place. I rented it months ago as a retreat from the campsite. At my age, it’s a lot more comfortable than a tent.”
“So are you going to tell us what this is all about?” Theresa asked.
“Yes,” Ruth said, gesturing to Theresa and Stephanie to sit down at the table, where she joined them.
“Okay,” she said. “I told you several times about my dig – and that I’d discovered a temple and residential structure that was obviously designed to house dignitaries when they came to the Valley of the Kings to review work being done on their tombs.”
“Uh-huh,” Theresa said. “You said it was a pretty big find.”
“It was,” Ruth said. “Until I found something bigger. Hidden in the structure was a scroll that detailed the contents of a secret tomb under construction – and it bears the cartouche of Rameses VIII,” Ruth said.
“Which one is that?” Stephanie asked.
“Rameses VIII was the seventh pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty and the last son of Rameses III,” Theresa said.
“Very good, Theresa,” Ruth said, grinning. “You were listening after all.”
