Free Range Feeding of Children
Having grown up with food issues my whole life, one of my biggest wishes as a new mom was to not pass those issues to Meghan. So from almost the moment I knew she was coming I started reading every thing I could on helping kids have a healthy relationship with food. It was not an easy thing. This is the story of what worked for us. It may not be the right choices for you. It started when we moved from bottle to baby food. One of the best pieces of advise I got was from an oriental grandmother that use to walk her grandson when I walked Meghan. I had shared with her my concerns and she told me not to start with fruit baby food because it was so sweet. She believed it was what gave westerners such a sweet tooth. On the other hand my grandmother told me to start with fruit because babies will like it better because its sweet. I opted for the first thought. It just made since to start with something that was a healthy choice. We started with vegetables one type at a time. Meghan loved vegetables until she went to elementary school. I actually never gave her baby food fruit. It just had to much sugar for my liking. There are these apple sauce cups made for the low sugar crowd that are flavored with things like mango or strawberries. She loved these. Once she was eating regular food, we opted for free range feeding. Meghan has never been told, you have to clean your plate or sit there and eat what you were given. Instead, she has always had access to 5 or 5 different healthy snacks/ meal options that she can eat at will. She as also been taught from a very early age what makes a food healthy. We used a children’s book called Eat Healthy, Feel Great by William Sears. It has a simple storybook approach that Meghan as able to use to make chooses even at age 4. When out to eat, they bring kids a ridiculous amount of food. We would look at the plate and have her tell us what was a Green light food, which was Yellow and which was Red. Then we would ask her, “What food do you need to eat first?” She knew to start with the Green light food. Ten years later she still eats like that. Also a tip for handling those plates with way to much food for a toddler, I would have them bring a to go box right away. We would put some of the yellow light foods and most of the red light foods in the box. If she wanted more, we could always move more to her plate. It helped her learn to think instead of mindlessly eating. Does she always eat what I want her too? No, she’s a teen. But mostly, she eats well. I am proud of most of her choices. At 14, this is a victory.
