Hiroshima Rocks Around - Ui Ar De Cempions (Major Labels Eat Their Shit)
(w/ hidden track tacked on that I don’t remember being on the actual record. can’t verify cause i sold that shit.)
Great new project from Armelle Oberle (The Dreams, Badaboum) and Olivier Demeaux (Cheveu) that takes moves from their previous acts, packs up and starts camp removed from anything else goin’ on right now. Demeaux handles the programming is my guess, while Oberle sings, chants, and forcefully wails along in German. Musically, songs run the gamut from twisted world music (”Pompei”) to the dance floor to simmering cinematic scores (”Wek”), all of it given flesh-and-blood feeling thanks to the incredible performance by Oberle. They’re at their strongest when they draw ideas out; the innocent start to “Tot und Hoch” flips about two minutes in, the lights coming up to reveal some cavernous cathedral draped in crimson. Shorter tracks like the above “Trocadero” and “So Traurig” are as close as Heimat cuddles with convention, and could stand another couple minutes of teasing out. There’s plenty of chill-inducing moments across the record - several in opener “Wieder Ja!” alone - that increase in potency over repeated listens. The band name has no English equivalent, their sound ain’t got one either. Invigorating and highly recommended.
Heimat’s Bandcamp has a pay-what-you-want download for this fine self-titled debut. Kill Shaman has the goods for US customers; Euros should look to Teenage Menopause.
