Killdeer Charadrius vociferus

Oh, that's so cool that they hang out around the Yellowstone hot springs! It makes perfect sense that they do, but seeing them on the ridge of that mineral pool is such a cool visual. Thank you so much for sharing!

Side note, vociferus is such a good scientific name for killdeer. When I went birding briefly the other day, there were a couple flying around and vocalizing the entire 1.5 hrs I was out. Eventually they fade into the background, but they are so loud and make it so hard to pick up anything else with Merlin!

Went for a bunch of blood tests (don’t ask) and some killdeers were yelling and running along the edges of the parking lot. They must have a nest on the ground somewhere. No wonder their species name is ‘vociferus’!

The Crawfordsville Monster is an alien-like creature found in Crawfordsville Indiana. The Crawfordsville Monster is described as a white creature being 18 feet long that had no definitive shape, with a giant red eye, and side flaps that let it fly; it also wheezed as it flew. Two men named John Hornbeck and Abe Hernley followed the creature only to find out it was a flock of killdeer which are a type of bird and the city’s new lighting made them look different however many are unsatisfied with this answer and still believe that the Crawfordsville Monster is a real encounter with an extraterrestrial.

Never talked about this before but I freakin love birds

I found these little guys by a pond, baby Killdeers! So teeny tiny you can barely see em, I’ll circle them under the cut

The mom attacked me but don’t worry no one was hurt

Don't killdeer unless killdeer. . I always thought of them as a fairly uncommon bird and had only seen killdeer a couple times before moving to Wenatchee, but I see them around here all the time. . Killdeer are one of the birds named after the sound they make. People think it sounds like they're saying "kill deer" but I don't hear it and for the record, they in fact do not kill deer. Just like how chickadees maintain no association with cheezebrgrs. But bird people are weird people and birds are not people so they get stuck with bad names sometimes. . I'll suggest a few alternative names for this birdo: snazzledorf wingdoodle, stripey-ring-eyed plover, plover fall over, liar-bird. . Ok, I'll explain liar-bird. They do an interesting thing where they'll fake having a broken wing to lure predators toward them and away from a nest. When the predator gets close, they'll move and do it again. Although I didn't see the nest and didn't look for it, this pair of killdeer took me for a walk. The first time I was actually concerned and approached to see if it was hurt, but as a big brained herbivore, I figured out the con (days later after reading an article online) . PS. The birds at my home feeder are obsessed with it and getting roudy. They also don't even care if I walk up to add seeds as they now easily empty the feeder in a day. They wait on the branch like 3 inches from my face.
