Killer Smile

The club seethes with life, thrums with music and hormones. Rocky’s is popular.

Over and over, the same scene plays out, two or more strangers recognize their match from a dating app and try to keep the online attraction alive in 3D.

Gary swipes a rag down the bar top and watches a new and giggling couple. He’s seen both before with lots of different people, never each other.

“Sorry.” Sarah grins. “I like to check out other people’s favourites.” She slides the goblet back across the table. “I wasn’t going to sample,” she winks, “from the glass.”

Shaun blushes, he looks younger, innocent. “You wanna go somewhere quieter?” He makes to stand, leaving most of his glass full.

“Let’s finish our drinks.” Sarah gulps her rum and coke and waits expectantly as Shaun takes another sedate sip. “It’s a sin to waste alcohol.”

They raise glasses and clink. Shaun finishes his wine and smiles.

Sarah’s eyes widen and gasps. “Now that’s a killer smile.” She holds out her hand and pulls the bemused man to his feet. He follows Sarah’s unsteady steps out of the club and into the dark alley, his feet clumsy with anticipation.

They kiss. Desire fogs thinking and the brash slam of the bar’s back door is easily ignored with the faint city noises.

A sudden prick of a needle sends Sarah and then Shaun into oblivion.

Gary drives and considers his options. One way or another, his hunt tonight has been a success.
