When I think about ...

all the times people could have killed me, but didn't, it boggles the mind. The shooting suspect on the bus, who stowed the gun on the seat next to him. He could have shot me as we got on the bus to arrest him. We wouldn't have been able to react in time. We walked right past him on the outside of the bus, he could have leaned out and shot us through the window at point blank range very easily. We didn't know he had a gun until after the fact. But he didn't kill me. Why not? Did he have too much respect for the institution of police, even though he's a violent felon? Was he too afraid of the consequences, knowing he would be killed or imprisoned for life for shooting us? Maybe he just thought that we are faster or better armed and armored than we actually are.
