Michael After Midnight: Killing Hasselhoff

Boy oh boy did I not expect to ever review this movie. Mostly because I, like everyone else, had no idea this movie even existed. This is one of those movies that just came and went, made no impact, and died off. It happens to a lot of comedies, especially comedies like this, and after watching it, yeah, I get why this just didn’t do anything for anyone.

Killing Hasselhoff is most definitely a vanity project; it was produced by the titular celeb, and the plot revolves around him. And that in and of itself is not really a bad thing, because Hasselhoff is such a fun and engaging celebrity. I’ve always liked him, though I’ve never seen the works that put him on the map. He was great in SpongeBob’s movie, his contributions to Kung Fury and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 are fantastic, his Comedy Central roast was a hoot… David Hasselhoff is usually just the right kind of cheese to bring out the flavor in a work. And I will say this – Hasselhoff is pretty consistently funny in this movie, even if there always is an air of “Yeah this is just a vanity project, I’m just doing this to make me look cool, I want a big fat paycheck.” But there’s just one little issue that really holds this film back:

This movie is a fucking relentlessly unfunny, offensive piece of shit.

This is exactly what doesn’t work with a lot of comedies, and why so many of them end up swept under the rug and forgotten. They all fall back on the most obvious, tasteless shock humor, stereotypes, and jokes about sex and drugs. And I’m not saying that jokes about sex and drugs are completely void of substance; some of the greatest comedies of all time have them, like Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian… But the thing is, these movies have variety in their jokes, it’s not just endless, relentless stereotypes, drugs, and sex jokes, and that is literally all Killing Hasselhoff is.

There is offensively stereotypical gays, there are jokes at the expense of the overweight and people with dwarfism, there’s the typical race related stuff you can expect when they cast Ken Jeong in a movie… Frankly it makes me a bit sad Ken Jeong keeps getting stuck in trashy comedies, because here as in everything else he actually does have some pretty good comedic skills, but they’re suffocated underneath the awful performances of nearly everyone else. I really have to say the gay, black hitman is the worst part of this movie. It’s almost intelligent and subversive, considering at first he displays no stereotypically gay qualities to him, so it seems this trashy comedy is almost going to pull off something progressive… then immediately afterwards he starts reminding the audience he’s gay every moment, saying stuff like “Whose dick do I have to suck around here...” and even attempts to rape David Hasselhoff at one point. YIKES.

Beyond this though, there’s not much to really comment on with this movie. It’s nothing but a long string of offensive, tasteless jokes that don’t land that wastes the talents of Ken Jeong, Jon Lovitz, and David Hasselhoff. It’s an awful, tasteless, unfunny film that I just can’t imagine would appeal to anyone because it feels like it goes out of its way to offend everyone. It’s barely worth watching unless you really just want to see Hasselhoff, and even then there are so many better things you could watch him in.

I think the funniest thing in this movie is something totally unintentional. At the end, David Hasselhoff sings a song (because of course he does) where he goes on about how he’s “crushing it.” What makes it funny is this film was released in 2017 in August, a month before a certain movie about a killer clown living in the sewers of a Maine town. Considering this film is an utterly forgotten shitty comedy that no one remembers and how It is a critically acclaimed blockbuster horror film, I think that I can say without a doubt that in this instance The Hoff is, in fact, NOT crushing It.
