I started reading “Killing Rage: Ending Racism” by bell hooks this morning, and though I do not want to share too much from the book as I believe we should be supporting works by black people with our money, I wanted to share a couple excerpts. I’m only 20 pages in, barely scratching the surface, and there’s already so much important information and experiences that all people would benefit from reading about.

Anyways, here are the two excerpts. bell hooks is talking about black rage as an expression of “passion for freedom and justice.” And for white people, like myself, it is important to make yourself understand black rage as a valid and beyond acceptable feeling.

“Para perpetuar e manter a supremacia branca, os brancos colonizaram os afro-americanos, e uma parte desse processo de colonização tem nos ensinado a reprimir nossa raiva, a nunca os tornar alvos de qualquer raiva que sentimos pelo racismo. A maioria dos negros internaliza bem essa mensagem. E embora muitos de nós tenha sido ensinado que a repressão de nossa raiva era necessária para se manter vivo nos dias anteriores à integração racial, agora sabemos que alguém pode ser exilado para sempre da promessa de bem-estar econômico se essa raiva não for permanentemente silenciada. Palestras sobre raça e racismo em todo o país, sempre me surpreendo quando ouço pessoas brancas falarem sobre seu medo de pessoas negras, de serem vítimas de violência negra. Eles podem nunca ter falado com uma pessoa negra e certamente nunca foram machucados por uma pessoa negra, mas estão convencidos de que sua resposta à negritude deve, antes de mais nada, ser medo e pavor. Eles também vivem em negação. Eles alegam temer que os negros os machuquem, embora não haja evidências que sugiram que os negros machuquem rotineiramente os brancos nesta ou em qualquer outra cultura. Apesar de muitos crimes relatados serem cometidos por criminosos negros, isso não ocorre com tanta frequência que sugere que todos os brancos devem temer qualquer pessoa negra.

Agora, os negros são rotineiramente agredidos e assediados pelos brancos na cultura supremacista branca. Essa violência é tolerada pelo Estado. É necessário para a manutenção da diferença racial. De fato, se os negros não aprenderam nosso lugar como cidadãos de segunda classe por meio de instituições educacionais, aprendemos isso pelos ataques diários perpetuados por pessoas brancas em nossos corpos e seres que sentimos, mas raramente protestamos ou nomeamos publicamente. Embora não vivamos nas mesmas condições ferozes do apartheid racial que apenas recentemente deixaram de ser nossa realidade social coletiva, a maioria dos negros acredita que, se não obedecerem aos padrões de comportamento aceitáveis determinados por brancos, não sobreviverão. Vivemos em uma sociedade em que ouvimos falar de pessoas brancas matando negros para expressar sua raiva. Podemos identificar incidentes específicos ao longo da nossa história neste país, seja Emmett Till, Bensonhurst, Howard Beach, etc. Podemos identificar incidentes raros em que pessoas negras responderam aleatoriamente ao seu medo de ataques brancos matando.

A raiva branca é aceitável, pode ser expressa e tolerada, mas a raiva negra não tem lugar e todo mundo sabe disso.“

i’ve never seen killing rage by bell hooks talked about online the only reason i know about it is because an anthro professor gave it to me for free at community college. i know exactly why it’s not talked about and it makes me so fucking angry

The rage of the oppressed is never the same as the rage of the privileged. One group can change their lot only be changing the system; the other hopes to be rewarded within the system.

Lecturing on race and racism all around this country, I am always amazing when I hear white folks speak about their fear of black people, of being the victims of black violence. They may never have spoken to a black person, and certainly never been hurt by a black person, but they are convinced that their response to blackness must first and foremost be fear and dread. They too live in denial. They claim to fear that black people will hurt them even though there is no evidence which suggests that black people routinely hurt whit people in this or any other culture. Despite the fact that many reported crimes are committed by black offenders, this does not happen so frequently as to suggest that all white people must fear any black person.  Now, black people are routinely assaulted and harassed by white people in white supremacist culture. This violence is condoned by the state. It is necessary for the maintenance of racial difference. Indeed, if black people have not learned our place as second-class citizens through educational institutions, we learn it by the daily assaults perpetuated by white offenders on our bodies and beings that we feel but rarely publicly protest or name.
