You know, I may have been OK with Palpatine's return (somehow), if it was a very weakened version of Palpatine, not just a rotting (debatably) living corpse who would struggle against Kilo Ren to take over the First Order and the galaxy once again. Also it could have made sens if it was revealed his return was a Snoke side project. Like snoke would have enslaved Sheev's clone, used him to boost his own power (maybe being disfigured as the result). Kilo find out after killing Snoke, then try to make Palpatine his counselor (after all, he was Vader's master, what Snoke did was outrageous) but makes it clear he is on the top of the relationship. However Kilo isn't has powerful as Snoke and Sheev... well he is still a master manipulator, and he uses Kilo and Hux's rivalry/hate, as well as Kilo's feelings (whatever they are) for Rey. Bonus point because it mirror's Rey's arc in the Last Jedi, where now Kilo is forced to confront his own idealized myth. Snoke was a mentor but he wasn't a figure of Legend the way Luke was for Rey. That way, Disney get to have their legacy character, and Kilo and Hux are still interesting. With a bit of "("the dark side ends up destroying itself at the end" which I don't dislike.
You can get rid of the stupid super fleet of planet killers too, because they are dumb. The First Order can have just enough ships to be an actual threat to the broken resistance.
