Let me start by saying this, this book was everything I wanted it to be and more. Becky's writing style really gives readers a glimpse into the confusing realm that is sexuality but gives us the happy ending we deserve.
From the first page I was hooked (that's normally very difficult for me to say). Often times, the first page of a book is okay and I wait to see what the characters are like before I make a decision. Immediately you're thrown into a very uncomfortable situation for Simon. A classmate is blackmailing Simon into getting him a date with Simon's friend Abby. In return for this, Simon won't be outed to the school.
From this conversation alone I knew I was not going to be a fan of Martin Addison but I was curious to see what Simon was going to do about the situation.
We follow Simon's journey throughout the school year, all the fights, the drama, the school play and until finally the picture-perfect ending in which he finally meets his online lover.
The entire concept of Simon and Bram e-mailing each other and slowly falling in love made my heart burst at the seams. I couldn't get enough of these two!! They're supposed to be anonymous but Simon wants to meet Bram so badly he starts "accidentally" slipping clues to his identity in the e-mails. Call me cheesy but the one thing I adore about reading love stories is getting to see how the character begins to realize they are in love with someone. Simon's giddiness about meeting Blue is almost impossible not to fall in love with. You almost wish the same thing would happen to your own love life.
Now while all of this was super adorable to read and made me squeal in the breakroom at work there was the part where all hell broke loose. Simon is outed by none other than Martin Addison. The reason he's outed is also ridiculous and the way his friends handled it? Even worse. It's almost Christmas and Martin decides to submit a homophobic post to CreekSecrets (an anonymous tumblr page for their school) on Christmas Eve. Now outing people is NEVER okay, it's not anyone's place to disclose another individual's sexuality but to do it on Christmas Eve? You have to be some sort of monster. I felt so utterly heartbroken for Simon, he was planning on coming out on his own terms and was forced to come out in an unpleasant manner. Luckily, his family didn't care and were happy as long as Simon was happy.
His friends on the other hand...
First, Leah and Nick come over the same night and don't mention anything of it to Simon. Instead of offering some emotional support to Simon and letting him know that they were there for him they decide to just act incredibly awkward around him and take off. Abby is the only one who messages him, asks if he's okay and reassures him that she loves him no matter what. Fast forward a little bit and Simon is all by himself. Simon clearly wasn't in a good headspace and was being blackmailed about his sexuality and everyone decides to make it about themselves. Leah gets mad that Simon told Abby before her but I really can't blame him, Abby shows a lot more caring personality traits than Leah does and he felt more comfortable telling her. Abby later gets upset that the entire reason they were hanging out with Martin was because he wanted a date. Basically, everything goes to shit for Simon as if being outed wasn't bad enough he's on the verge of losing all of his friends.
Bonus: I just need to add that I completely adore Ms. Albright, shes a complete badass for sticking up for Simon and letting the school know that she will not tolerate any sort of homophobia.
Thankfully, Becky doesn't let the story end on a sad note. Simon realizes that "Blue" is really Bram and they end up meeting in the cutest way possible. A carnival date??? It took everything in me not to cry happy tears in the breakroom.
Everything works out for Simon in the end and I cannot even begin to describe how happy that makes me. A gay love story with a happy ending!!! I would read this book a million times over and never get tired of watching Simon and Bram's love blossom. They're so pure and mushy for each other you can't help but smile. My final thoughts are that everything in this book was realistic. Simon questioning himself, the nervousness of being openly gay, the giddiness and the rush of being in love but also acknowledging the homophobia in Simon’s world. Simon and Bram are and interracial gay relationship who deserved every ounce of love and admiration that came their way. How could you not fall in love with the way they remember little things about each other, the gifts (specifically the t-shirt) and just how happy they make each other. Well this is the end of my review, I couldn’t put everything in here but I hope this inspires someone to read the book and watch the movie. Love, Kimmy
Hello All!
I took a mini break from writing posts for a bit because of writer’s block and a really heavy work schedule. I’ll be posting frequently for the school year and I’ll be doing a stationary haul soon! Hope everyone is enjoying these last few weeks of summer. xo
So with spring final exams coming around the corner I have decided to make a list of the study techniques I use to get the best marks possible. To everyone studying for exams right now, I with you the best of luck! Don’t worry you got this!
1. Make a schedule and STICK TO IT.
Plan out your schedule, lay out the exams you have to write and include the time, place and what you need to bring. Take a look at what classes you’re going to study harder in and organize your days into segments so you don’t end up cramming the night before.
2. Use Cue Cards.
Using cue cards helps so much! I use it for terms and definitions of important things I would otherwise forget. It’s fun to play memory games with them and it helps with remembering things faster.
3. Mind-maps
Using mind maps helps a lot when you want to make summaries of chapters. Write down the name of the chapter and branch out on key topics that were covered in the chapter as well. Mind maps are interactive and give you an at-glance look on what chapter covers overall
4. Figure Out Your Learning Style
There are plenty of tests out there that can determine how you learn! Career cruising has an awesome test that I use every few months to see if my learning style has changed. This is really important to know if you’re a visual learner, audio learner or kinesthetic learner. Once you figure out your learning style you can make a proper study plan that will help you.
5. Make Lists
Lists are literally my life. I have lists posted all over my room wall. They’re all colour-coordinated too. I have my readings list for each course, my assignments list, household chores + expenses lists. Everything is put in a list. It helps a lot because you remember things when you write them down! And then that feeling of accomplishment crossing things off the list? Awesome.
One of my favourite exam printables was created by exohypernova so check out her stuff!
6. Focus
Stick to your lists, stick to your study schedule and focus on exactly what you’re working towards here. You’re looking to get that diploma or that degree, pass that test or just work on organizing your personal life.
7. Take Care of Yourself
I cannot stress this one enough. Once you get to post-secondary your mindset changes and things get overwhelming. It’s your first time away from your parents. You’re worried about school, friends, romantic relations and whatever else life throws at you. Between your school work make sure you schedule time for yourself. This doesn’t have to be just self-care days, make sure you have time to see your friends too! Make sure you’re eating properly, drinking enough water and not constantly pulling all-nighters.
When you take care of your body and mind it will take care of you.
