I could cry. The sweetest early birthday present.
I've admired this obi before -- at the bus depot markets is a very wonderful gentleman who does his own imports of obi, kimono, yukata and many other traditional pieces along with modern stylised pieces. When I was more fluent in speaking we used to converse in Japanese but my fluency outside of reading has gotten very bad due to lack of use, but he always remembers me and greets me with a smile and welcomes me into his stall. He's who I got my yukata from!
I saw this obi back in April and just about died from excitement. It's very rare to find obi, especially maru obi like this which would potentially be 80-100 years old, with eagle (鷹) motifs. Not only is it a true eagle, and not a generalised bird of prey like some taka tend to be, but it's a harpy eagle. Perched on a pine branch (松鷹図) no less.
It was expensive but not ungodly expensive like some other vintage maru obi I've seen with phoenixes and the likes, but at the time was very much out of my budget with my situation.
We went to the markets today and I powered up the slope to get to the upper level today to see him, and low and behold he's holding a mid-winter sale. Everything at least 50% off. Including this.
Meaning I got this stupidly rare motif in beautiful condition for under $100.
One day I'll find a furisode or kimono to wear with it, along with all the other proper dressings, because I would very much love to learn the art of proper kimono dressing since it's so intricate and beautiful in its traditions, but having this amazing, AMAZING long maru obi to start off my dressings in such a gorgeous motif is truly awesome.
