ok hot take but i don’t think claude came to fodlan to increase his chances of becoming king or gaining favor in almyra or whatever. technically claude never gives an explicit reason (that i remember) except “to see what the other side of [his] family was like”. which i think most people agree is not the real reason. and i agree, to an extent.

that quote in particular i believe to mean that he wanted to know how he would be treated in fodlan. obviously we know there were people in almyra that treated him terribly, so it’s fair enough for him as a ~15-16 yr old to go, “hey i wonder if less people will try to kill me in the country my mom came from”. it makes sense that given the option to go somewhere where maybe he’ll be treated better, he’d take it. by keeping his identity a secret, i’d say he achieved that.

next theres the issue of why would anyone in almyra even care if one of their princes took over leicester or was ruling it. if almyra cared that much they would’ve taken it over already i bet. but they don’t, seeing how the only time they seriously attacked leicester was in hopes. by shahid, who, yes, did want to take over the alliance to gain his fathers favor, but really didn’t give a single reason why that would work. not to mention he’s obviously a terrible leader anyway (shahid not the king) but thats neither here nor there. if claude, who seems to be well known as being part-fodlan, were to be in charge of leicester, they’re not gonna care. it never gets brought up in houses or hopes to my knowledge, so i don’t see why having leicester would help him in almyra. and that’s all excluding the obvious fact that almyra hates fodlan.

finally, what i think claude actually came for. i mentioned the part about him coming to have less people try to kill him and such, which i do think may have been part of it, but i think there was another main reason. he probably left almyra to try and improve fodlan to a point where it could reasonably make amends with almyra. to roughly quote his S support, he says he’s used his fodlan blood as much as he could, and is now returning to his homeland to try to change it for the better. then he says “it’s time for me to struggle all over again and see what good i can do”. to me that implies that he was trying to use his role in fodlan to help make peace viable between the two. of course, he wouldn’t have anticipated all of fodlan’s problems he’d get into when first going there, but i don’t think that takes anything away from that idea.

it’s hard for me to say exactly what his plan was without the war happening, but for vw once they defeated edelgard and the agarthans, he likely recognized that byleth was the best choice to rule fodlan, and knew there wouldn’t be an issue negotiating positive relations with byleth in charge. so he leaves for almyra to fix its problems and work on his goals. he realizes he’s done what he can in fodlan, and goes to almyra to do what he can there. in terms of the other routes where he just randomly leaves the alliance for the empire in cf or kingdom in am or… whatever in ss, i think this still applies. he sees that the alliance isn’t getting out of this war in any kind of shape where he can do anything, so he goes to almyra. not saying it was a great decision on his part but it makes the most sense to me through that lens. he sees theres nothing left he can do, especially in cf where the empire is clearly going to win, and leaves to do whatever he can for his dreams.
