The BBC aired a program about a Jewish child whose cello was damaged while escaping the Nazis during the Holocaust… and left out any mention of Jews. How dare they erase Jews from our own story? How dare they erase Jews from the Holocaust? Only after British Jews spoke out did the BBC issue a clarification in the episode description that the Kindertransport evacuated Jewish children, specifically. Jews shouldn’t have to continuously hold the BBC accountable. The BBC shouldn’t continuously fail Jews.

Kurt Marx: Kindertransport Travel Document • AJR Refugee Voices archive

This is a Kindertransport Travel Document, issued to fourteen-year-old Kurt Marx in Cologne, allowing him to travel to the UK as part of the Kindertransport scheme. Unusually, Kurt travelled to the UK with his school, the Jewish Jawne Gymnasium, arriving in January 1939.

After Kristallnacht in 1938, the Jawne’s forward-thinking headteacher, Erich Klibansky, began arrangements to get Jawne students to Britain on a Kindertransport. Kurt remembers saying goodbye to his mother and father in the belief that they would soon meet in England when his parents got the necessary documentation. This did not happen and Kurt never saw his parents again.

The Wind Knows My Name by Isabel Allende

As I’ve said before, (about The Long Petal of the Sea https://www.tumblr.com/joebloggshere/615286436448665600/a-long-petal-of-the-sea-by-isabel-allende-this ) Allende used to be one of my favourite writers and after years of her trying out different genres of writing, I for one am so thrilled that she is back telling individual’s stories against the backdrop of historical events.

I started this book and thought it was about showing us how through history, and different countries and cultures, man’s inhumanity to man knows no bounds. It is, but it is so much more as well.

Told through the voices of different refugees from Germany and El Salvador which seem to have no connections, about three quarters of the way through the novel, Allende brings these troubled souls together in a very satisfying way. I don’t usually like ‘neat’ endings but this one works, oh so well.

Highly recommend.

After the Nazis invaded Austria, Hans Weinmann, like so many other Jewish children, was expelled from his school simply because he was Jewish. Jews were also banned from using public streetcars, making it nearly impossible for Hans to reach the only school he was then allowed to attend.

This bus pass was his lifeline. It gave Hans access to education in a world that was quickly closing in on him because of antisemitism.

On June 13, 1939, Hans escaped through the Kindertransport, a rescue effort that brought thousands of Jewish children to safety in Britain. To qualify, Hans had to prove he was healthy enough to make the journey. These everyday items—a bus pass and a medical certificate—helped Hans survive the Holocaust.
