That’s not whole fictionkinity works anon! Kintypes are you, and you are your kintypes! You cannot just ‘unkin’ or ‘drop’ kintypes just because you don’t like them or the source! That is not possible!
Saying you can do so is incredibly hurtful and harmful to people! It encourages people who aren’t alterhuman to think it’s possible to stop being kin from [insert random source that tumblr currently considers problematic or bad for whatever reasons of the month til their collective attention span changes]! This gives those people an invalid reason to harass people for their kintypes!
[side note: stop this! Go after the actual creators of these media! Go write to the producers or media conglomerates that are paying for these things to be made! Bullying people who do not have the power to change or cease production of these problematic medias does nothing!!]
If you realize you do not have a kintype from something after some consideration, that’s fine! That’s part of the process of awakening as a kintype! This is why people, usually those who have been awakened as fictionkin [or therians, otherkin, and so forth] for more than a few years encourage other people to not jump into fictokintypes! To not see a fanart or and go ‘oh thats me’ without further investigation!
Yes some people can do that, I’m not saying it’s entirely impossible! But it’s not as common as you may think, and everyone should actually engage with their source before adding kintype(s) to their personal list of confirmed fictotypes!

ps the concept of being able to drop or ‘unkin’ kintypes is also something used by abusers to manipulate their victims into supressing or acquiring false kintypes in order to isolate the victim, or manipulate the victim into thinking they are meant to be tied to their abuser(s) through multiple lives / timelines / canons!
Stop saying you can apply and discard kintypes like they’re clothing! You are helping abusers hurt people like this! God!
in regards to a recent ask about feeling guilty for wanting to drop a kintype, I say this as someone who has identified as otherkin since I was a child, so about 20 years now. It is ALWAYS okay to drop a kintype. These feelings come and go, sometimes kintypes merge into someone new entirely, or usually there's just a weird gray period at the beginning where you're still figuring yourself out. It happens. But it is always okay to stop identifying as something/someone. Part of the process is supposed to be getting really introspective and sitting with these feelings for a while, and things might change during that time. And that's okay. I think that's something anyone who's feeling guilty needs to hear

its MY involuntary and actually-i-didn't-choose-this-so-stop-trying-to-cancel-people-for-it kintypes, so I'M the one who gets to decide if i repress the connection to the FICTIONAL content that has NO bearing on who i am now or how i choose to act in this life. fr tho so many people like to gatekeep over things that people CAN'T choose to have a connection to. it's not like people who have no control over their shifts can just shove an identity away in a little padlocked box in the corner just because people decided to cancel it later, AFTER the problematicism comes to my attention, and it's not like i have the spoons to constantly deep dive and fact check every little nuance that people have about disecting media that was previously considered ok to consume. like sure let's try not to actively endorse anything that's legitimately problematic, but at the same time can we PLEASE stop shitting on people who genuinely can't help but remain kin with things that have now become the latest Blacklist Topic Of The Week? inb4 angry comments in the replies but it's almost like y'all forgot the original pre-internet definition of otherkin, where "dropping" a "problematic" kintype wasn't a thing people could do on command.

Not one myself, but if you genuinely enjoy a piece of media - while acknowledging the problems around it and making a conscious effort not to endorse any of that problematicism irl - then who cares what your connection to the source is? Don't let people bully you into repressing your kintypes just because the source has a few bad eggs about it. Of course if the source is actively endorsing something bad itself, especially irl, then yeah that's a whole other story, but a fictional cartoon about fictional demonic imps set in a fictional world isn't something you should feel the need to drop kintypes over. Simply acknowledge the bad parts and stay mindful of them.
(To clarify this is NOT a jab at the other ask, nor do I think they intended any bullying of hazbin/helluva kin or fans, but I wanted to give my own take on this as well in case anyone who kins from these series felt uncomfortable or like it was a backhanded compliment or like they need to repress a problematic kintype).

i'm really sorry if this is a bad take but i feel so uncomfortable when people talk about "dropping" their kins, or "cleaning up" their kinlists. like someone just told me they dropped a kintype they'd had memories for. i don't get it. how can you let go of them like that? i try not to take kinning too seriously.. but how do you *stop* being someone... i just can't understand that sort of attitude. #🗝✨📖
I just feel slightly guilty because a small part of me tells me I could just drop a kintype, that I could just stop saying they're me and it would be true.
And I hate that because I am them. I can't stop being them but my brain still thinks that it's just something to be dropped. I can't drop a kintype, to do so would hurt, but I also can't get my brain to understand it's not something I can drop!
I think this is just because I declared myself to be fictionkin so quickly, but I did have the feelings and I still do! So why is my brain trying to make me feel guilty?
