~ Alfor's the kind of friend who loves going on potentially dangerous adventures/situations and sometimes has to be saved, but he's also really nice and caring
~ Blaytz ~
~ Blaytz is the kind of friend who's flirty and usually has one of his arms slung over someone's shoulders
~ He's also the kind of friend who's kind to everyone around him, very stylish fun loving
~ Trigel ~
~ Trigel's the kind of friend who's extremely reliable and is always listens to you if something's bothering you
~ Gyrgan ~
~ Gyrgan's the kind of friend who has a big heart and who enjoys joking around, but not in a way that hurts someone's feelings
I did. I was born in the 80's and grew up on all the 80's cartoons, including Voltron. I finished watching the reboot(which was fantastic btw) and I got bit by the Nostalgia Bug. I went back and started watching the old 80's version for the fun of it, and to kind of refresh my memory.
So it's 12am and just getting into episode 8 when my over tired brain slapped my Nostalgia Glasses off with a ruinous realization.

with me as I can by burning the same mental image into your brains that is now stuck in mine.
Forget what you know about Haggar and Zarkon in VLD but today we’re looking at their relationship in DoTU, which is very, very different. Messed up as the dynamic between Lotor and Merla is, it’s nothing compared to the tragically toxic mess of a relationship between these two. What exactly do I mean by that? And how did they even become a thing in the first place? I’ll answer those questions the best I can with what’s presented in the show and some of my own speculations.
Haggar explains how she became entangled with Zarkon during “The Fleet of Doom” made for TV movie. At one point Haggar steals Allura’s soul, which takes the form of a pink spirit, and whisks it away to another dimension that is shaped by people’s fears. While trapped there, Allura demands to know why Haggar is so cruel and if there’s any good left in her. The witch explains she was once a beautiful and kind sorceress who used her powers for good. Then she met Zarkon, who seduced her into using her magic for evil. Over time the use of dark magic twisted her body and soul, leaving a withered hag Zarkon wants nothing to do with beyond her powers.
Keith shows up to rescue Allura and defeats the witch. But is determined Allura to bring out whatever goodness still lives inside the witch. Haggar tries to flee but Allura’s soul chases after her, saying she knows Haggar is still good inside, offers her friendship, and tells Haggar it’s possible for her to happy again if she just embraces the goodness left inside of her. Haggar admits that she’s miserable and her good side manifests as her beautiful past self. She helps Allura and Keith escape, but returns to Zarkon’s side because she believes he’ll need her now more than ever.
This scene is crucial to understanding Zarkon and Haggar’s relationship: it’s an incredibly unhealthy one-sided love where Zarkon is a user and Haggar, despite her bitterness and misery, can’t bring herself to leave him. This is not to say Haggar is a complete doormat. While she’s is his adviser and his plans rely heavily on her powers, he can be be very disrespectful and dismissive of her, causing her become spiteful and lash out. She gone behind Zarkon’s back, disobeyed orders, kept secrets, and sometimes provided aid to Lotor and/or Merla with plans he would disapprove of send her resentment boils over.
But she still wants his love. Keep in mind this has gone on for a long, LONG time too. It’s implied that they’re both centuries old, possibly over a thousand, something achieved using Haggar’s dark magic. To me it just further highlights just how messed up this relationship is. But she seems to believe that if she’ powerful enough, useful enough, and/or destroys Voltron that she’ll finally get her heart’s desire.
I don’t think how Zarkon treats Haggar is surprising. For one, he’s characterized as a womanizer, at least in the show’s second season. He flirts with Merla, calling her lovely and asks for a back massage, among other things. At the end of “The Fleet of Doom” Haggar disguises herself as a pretty black haired human woman and approaches Zarkon in his throne. He immediately tries to act suave, telling her “You’re quite lovely, my dear,” as he puts his hands on her shoulders and pulls her close to him. Haggar gets the last laugh when she transforms back into her true self right before his eyes. These scenes, combined with how he lost interest interest in Haggar once she became ugly, suggests to me that he values women mainly for their looks and discards them once their beauty gives out. The only reason Haggar is still around is because she’s too useful. Otherwise she would of been completely discarded. He never loved her and no matter what Haggar does, he never will.
