how long has it been since you jumped into the pool?

kinich keeps his face calm while talking to the person who just walked into the gym. he’s talking like nothing is wrong, like there isn’t a hand gripping his leg under the water.

your hand that’s on his leg holding on for dear life, while the other is laced with his.

“you’re not coming with us?” sethos asks.

yes. sethos. not scaramouche. not your cousin.

kinich will never forget the sound of that door opening. the way you froze for half a second before diving straight into the deep pool. he knew that you didn’t even think before you moved. you just… jumped.

he also saw you sink. saw the panic when you came back up, hands moving around, trying to grab something that made him slowly stretch his leg toward you so you won’t sink deeper and drown.

he didn’t even know if you could swim, but with how hard you’re holding on? yup. he’s guessing you can’t.

now he’s starting to worry because he lost count of how long you’ve been underwater.

just a little longer, y/n. hang in there.

he’s thinking if he should probably pull you up and tell you it’s not scaramouche, but if he does, sethos will start asking question— no.

his friend gets curious easily and when he does, he doesn’t stop.

“where?” kinich asks calmly.

“karaoke. heizou called me. he said he already dragged scara with him, so they’re there.”

“i see…”

kinich glances down at the water. you’re still holding him and he almost sighed in relief when he saw your small movements. at least you’re not drowning.

but he needs sethos to leave because he’s not sure how much longer you can hold your breath.

“well?”

“i’ll think about it. i’ll send you a message if i’m going, seth.”

for a second, sethos drops his smile before grinning again. “alright… see you tomorrow, then!”

kinich nods, trying not to look guilty as he waves casually.

he watches sethos leave and the door finally closes. he waits a second, just to be sure that his friend is really gone, then he squeezes your hand— the one still holding his— and moves it slightly as if telling you, “you’re safe now.”

thankfully, you get the message and you come up fast.

“thought he’d never leave…!” you gasp, pushing wet hair out of your face.

“you good?” kinich asks.

“another minute and i’d drown…”

you swim to the edge and rest your arms on it, breathing hard.

kinich stays where he is, looking down at you with a small smile. honestly, his heart was beating so fast the whole time he was talking to sethos. he’s just glad that his friend didn’t walk further in. if he saw you underwater, he would’ve either made up a hundred stories in his head, make some possible scenarios, or worse, he would’ve accidentally snitched on your cousin about this little secret and get-away of yours.

kinich would admit, it gets him excited and challenging. but he needs to consider your situation too because he knows— as in, know, that getting on the bad side of your cousin is not the very best idea right now.

“i don’t know if it’s just me…” kinich starts.

“hmm?”

“what we’re doing.. hiding from scara and all, it kinda looks like we’re having a… you know?”

you blink at him, not getting what he’s saying.

he stares back and based on your reaction, you still don’t get it.

he laughs softly and looks away. “so it’s just me, huh.”

“we’re having a what?”

“never mind. forget it.” he clears his throat. “anyway, you’re soaked. you don’t have spare clothes, right?”

you froze. “oh my god— i’m so stupid—!”

your voice echoed in the gym and kinich laughed. he stands up and holds his hand out to you.

“i have spare clothes. you can wear mine, if you don’t mind.”

“y/n?”

you almost drop your phone when you hear kinich’s voice from the kitchen.

okay. wwad method #1: don’t panic.

“uh… yes?”

“the bath is ready,” kinich calls out. “and i’ll head out to buy something. just make yourself at home when you’re done.”

your brain short-circuits. why does this feel like something that happens in teenage romance dramas?!

“oh, um, okay… thank you.” you take the towel he hands you and almost rush to the bathroom.

it still feels unreal that you’re in his apartment.

your crush’s apartment.

yes. crush. you already accepted that you have feelings for this man that was once your chat bestie. i mean, technically he still is, but it just feels different now. and that difference makes you nervous in a way you don’t like.

how does one even act in a situation like this?

you look at yourself in the mirror. your face is kinda red and you silently wish that kinich didn’t notice you blushing when he handed you a towel.

“you like him, so now what?” you put your hands on the sink and stare intently in your reflection. “this is just a happy crush, okay? it will fade eventually if you ignore it. just act normal around him, y/n. i know you can do it.”

taking this note to yourself, you took a deep breath and started preparing.

the moment you sink into the tub, your shoulders finally relax. the warm water wraps around you, and you let out a long sigh. you lean your head back against the edge and close your eyes.

and then all of a sudden, you remember your coach’s words.

whatever happened in that meeting is exactly why you’re in this mess.

why you ended up soaked after mistaking kinich’s friend for your cousin. why you jumped into the pool without hesitation. why kinich had to lend you his clothes because you didn’t bring any.

why you’re now in his apartment. taking a bath so you don’t catch a cold.

all because your stupid feet walked you into the pool gym at the worst, fricking, time.

you let out a groan.

what if it really had been scara who walked in earlier? what if he saw kinich hiding me? what if he found out his friend and his cousin know each other— and have been talking and even meeting in secret? what would even happen after that?

“dammit. stop thinking, stupid y/n.”

you slide deeper into the water until only your eyes and forehead are above the surface.

maybe if you sink a little more, your thoughts will drown too.

you stayed in the bathroom for almost thirty minutes. when you finally stepped out and walked into the living room, you almost screamed when you heard an unfamiliar voice.

“huh? who are you?”

you turn to the right and see a small girl standing near the door. she’s wearing a yellow hoodie and a cap, and she’s staring at you with bright blue eyes. there’s a paper bag in her hand, and you can see the head of a dinosaur plushie peeking out.

cute…

“ah— hello! i’m kinich’s friend,” you say quickly, waving at her with a small smile. please believe me. i really am his friend!

“friend…?” she slowly looks you up and down. “then why are you wearing his clothes?”

right. about that….

you try to think of an excuse, but with the way she’s staring at you makes it clear— this kid won’t fall for anything.

who is this adorable one anyway?

“kachina? what are you doing here?”

this time, a familiar voice chimed in.

kinich walks in, holding not one, not two, but three paper bags. you want to ask what’s inside them, but your brain is stuck on something else.

kachi… what?

“big brother kinich!!”

kachi-ydk runs to him and hugs him tightly. he catches her easily and wraps an arm around her. she’s smiling so wide, and so is kinich.

this is the first time that you saw him smile like that. his eyes look warmer too. she must be someone important to him, like a sister. but they don’t look alike, so maybe a relative?

you don’t even notice you’re also smiling while watching them so when your eyes meet his, kinich gently puts her down and starts introducing you.

“kachina, this is my friend, y/n,” he says, placing the paper bags on the sofa. “and y/n, this is kachina. she’s from natlan. you could say she’s my little sister.”

“you could say”?

that sounds like a very private matter so you decided not to ask. instead, you wave at her again. “nice to meet you, kachina.”

she smiles back and suddenly runs toward you.

“can i call you big sister y/n?”

oh my heart.

“of course you can!”

after a few minutes, two more of kinich’s friends from natlan arrived to pick up kachina. they said they were going sightseeing since this was her second time in inazuma, and she’d been waiting for it. the trip was supposed to be with kinich, but he had to pass this time and promised he’d make it up next time.

apparently, kachina wanted to stay with kinich while she’s here, so she dropped her things off here before leaving.

you start to feel a little bad, but kinich reassures you. he said that it’s fine, and that ifa and ororon— that’s the name of his friends— understand.

when kinich introduced you to them, there were a few teasing remarks. he kept saying you two were just friends, and that something had happened which was why you were in his apartment and borrowing his clothes.

honestly? that part where he keeps insisting that you’re just friends kind of stings. but you can't blame the guy, he had no idea about your small little crush on him that's starting to bloom, so all you could do was back him up and tell his friends that their friend was telling the truth.

“a penny for your thoughts?”

kinich walks in and puts a bowl of nachos on the center table. you’ve decided to have a little movie marathon while waiting for your clothes to dry.

you hug a pillow close to your chest.

“we’re friends, right?”

“where’s this coming from?” he asks, sitting beside you and picking up the remote. “of course we are.”

ouch.

you force a laugh, smiling weakly. “right… we are!”

grabbing the bowl, you decide to change the subject to avoid the awkward silence. “anyway, your friends are so nice and cute. what were their names again?”

“ifa and ororon?” you nodded. “those two are like brothers. they never leave each other's side to the point that the people in our neighborhood mistaken them as twins.”

“really?”

you were just about to take a bite of a chip but kinich beats you to it.

what… the hell?

“but i’m cuter, right?”

you stare at the half-eaten nacho on your fingers before slowly turning your head to look at him.

you blink at him, caught off guard by the sudden question.

kinich is grinning like he knows exactly what he’s doing. he grabs a chip from the bowl you were holding and eats it slowly, eyes still on you.

you feel your cheeks heat up. great. he really knows what he’s doing.

not wanting him to notice your flushing face, you look away and clear your throat. “so what happened to ‘sorry to shatter your imagination, but i’m not cute’?”

your lips curl into a small, smug smile. you decided that you will not back down. it’s not fair that he’s the only one who makes you flustered, right?

kinich freezes for a moment, his grin disappearing. you can’t read his expression now, and somehow that makes your heart beat faster.

“i said that?” he asks innocently, but you know he remembers perfectly.

“one month ago, i think?” you said. “when we started chatting and didn't know what we looked like.”

he goes silent again, and you stare at the nachos to hide your racing thoughts. you can still feel the warmth of his shoulder next to yours, and it makes your chest flutter.

after a few quiet seconds, he nudges you gently. “but… i’m cuter than those two, right?”

DAMN RIGHT YOU ARE! “well… you’re shorter than them, so yeah. you are.”

“the height isn’t necessary,” kinich mumbled. “but i’ll take it. you said before that you like short guys so that’s a win.”

looks like he has no intention of backing down, don’t he?

before you can say anything, kinich leans his head on your shoulder.

“though for some reason,” he says softly, “i don’t like it when you call other guys cute. ifa is very well-known in our hometown and he’s friends with everyone so i don’t think that counts as cute. ororon doesn’t care about anything but his fruit and vegetable crops, and he sometimes calls me old man so that guy is far from cute.”

you bite your lip, not sure what to say. why is he telling you these anyway? and is that jealousy you heard in his tone?

“anyway,” he continues, “you barely know them, and it’s unlikely you’ll see them again so forget about them. what do you want to watch?”

yep, it is jealousy, indeed.

a/n: this update was supposed to be yesterday but tumblr is being a btch so here, an early update right after my shift yall :D

SYNOPSIS: you dont know why you have your cousin’s best friends’ number saved on your phone, but all you know is that he’s attractive— exactly your type. not wanting to lose this chance to shoot your shot, you decided to become his chat bestie to get closer to him because why not? it’s not everyday you’d get to talk to someone as handsome as him!
