Brisbane Airport Contextual Analysis
Temporal
In general, people would prefer to arrive at the airport a couple of hours earlier before the boarding time of their flight, so that they can have sufficient time to finish all the procedures, namely check-in, security and carry-on bag check and so forth. According to the statistics from BAC, the average time that international passengers spent at terminal is 165 minutes, which includes check-in (10 minutes), customs and security (15 minutes), in retails outlet (19 minutes), and idle time. That means after going through a standard process, most of the passengers may still have some spare time before finally boarding. As a result, some sort of entertainment can be an ideal for the passengers to pass this long period of boredom.
When passengers have too much time to kill, they tend to go shopping or just window shopping. However, the retails at the airport are few in number and styles when compared with a shopping mall. There comes an opportunity to create some entertaining events for them to consume their idle time.
Spatial
Excluding the retail areas, most of the spare space in the airport are the lounge areas for passengers. These areas can be renovated by using different materials, textures or technologies in order to improve the local environment. The aim of building these areas is to provide some comfortable places for the passengers to have a good rest. Here is a chance for the airport to improve the functions of these areas.
Cultural
In Brisbane International Airport, it is not hard to take notice of a mixture of people of different cultural backgrounds. For example, for those whose first language is not English, there might be some degree of linguistic barriers encountered while the airport staffs are trying to help the passengers. Here are some human resources which can be improved for passengers.
For providing a convenient guide to the foreign passengers, translated booklets or forms can be found at designated sites inside the airport. But plenty of paper copies are often found untouched. That means few passengers notice the booklets. For generating a creative innovation, translated booklets can be digitalized.
For providing a convenient departure service to the international passengers (those who is going to leave BNE), here is an opportunity to remind them of the moments that they have had during their visits. International passengers who have to stay in the airport for a couple of hours due to a delayed flight or transfer, helping them spend their extra time meaningfully could be the main mission as well.
For providing a convenient arrival service to the international passengers, first-time visitor and experienced visitors alike, here is an opportunity to show them this friendly and dynamic city. Creating more easy ways for them to get to know and embrace this city is the main mission.
For providing a good memory for the passenger, here is a chance for the airport to design and sell some special souvenirs which are related to the airport or the local customs.
Technical
Comparing with using the free public devices, people prefer to use their own devices in their spare time. However, it may be embarrassing for the international passengers when they try to use their own internet data in a foreign country since this kind of service is costly and unavailable sometimes. Yet despite the fact that most airports offer free Wi-Fi or free public devices for passengers, they have set time limit for the access.
An improvement plan can be considered on making a connection between passengers’ departure time and the limited free Wi-Fi access. When passengers try to log in the free Wi-Fi or require accessing the public devices, they should be asked to input their flight number. Then, the Wi-Fi access will not be shut down until the passengers depart.
