Brisbane Airport Contextual Analysis
Temporal
In general, people would prefer to arrive at the airport a couple of hours earlier before the boarding time of their flight, so that they can have sufficient time to finish all the procedures, namely check-in, security and carry-on bag check and so forth. According to the statistics from BAC, the average time that international passengers spent at terminal is 165 minutes, which includes check-in (10 minutes), customs and security (15 minutes), in retails outlet (19 minutes), and idle time. That means after going through a standard process, most of the passengers may still have some spare time before finally boarding. As a result, some sort of entertainment can be an ideal for the passengers to pass this long period of boredom.
When passengers have too much time to kill, they tend to go shopping or just window shopping. However, the retails at the airport are few in number and styles when compared with a shopping mall. There comes an opportunity to create some entertaining events for them to consume their idle time.
Spatial
Excluding the retail areas, most of the spare space in the airport are the lounge areas for passengers. These areas can be renovated by using different materials, textures or technologies in order to improve the local environment. The aim of building these areas is to provide some comfortable places for the passengers to have a good rest. Here is a chance for the airport to improve the functions of these areas.
Cultural
In Brisbane International Airport, it is not hard to take notice of a mixture of people of different cultural backgrounds. For example, for those whose first language is not English, there might be some degree of linguistic barriers encountered while the airport staffs are trying to help the passengers. Here are some human resources which can be improved for passengers.
For providing a convenient guide to the foreign passengers, translated booklets or forms can be found at designated sites inside the airport. But plenty of paper copies are often found untouched. That means few passengers notice the booklets. For generating a creative innovation, translated booklets can be digitalized.
For providing a convenient departure service to the international passengers (those who is going to leave BNE), here is an opportunity to remind them of the moments that they have had during their visits. International passengers who have to stay in the airport for a couple of hours due to a delayed flight or transfer, helping them spend their extra time meaningfully could be the main mission as well.
For providing a convenient arrival service to the international passengers, first-time visitor and experienced visitors alike, here is an opportunity to show them this friendly and dynamic city. Creating more easy ways for them to get to know and embrace this city is the main mission.
For providing a good memory for the passenger, here is a chance for the airport to design and sell some special souvenirs which are related to the airport or the local customs.
Technical
Comparing with using the free public devices, people prefer to use their own devices in their spare time. However, it may be embarrassing for the international passengers when they try to use their own internet data in a foreign country since this kind of service is costly and unavailable sometimes. Yet despite the fact that most airports offer free Wi-Fi or free public devices for passengers, they have set time limit for the access.
An improvement plan can be considered on making a connection between passengers’ departure time and the limited free Wi-Fi access. When passengers try to log in the free Wi-Fi or require accessing the public devices, they should be asked to input their flight number. Then, the Wi-Fi access will not be shut down until the passengers depart.

Haneda Airport
Temporal
Currently, in order to avoid missing flight, more and more people tend to arrive airport in advance. Once in Haneda Airport what passengers could do was only to shop at duty-free stores , but now numerous attractive things have appeared and become better ways for killing waiting time. The most exciting thing is all Nippon Airways company is offering a service for passengers to enjoy an augmented reality view of a robot-like machine in the animation series "Neon Genesis Evangelion" via their smartphones or tablets.
Spatial
For an airport, space is extremely preciousness. The App only requires smartphones or laptops, thus, it can save space and reduce certain budget for the airport. For the EVA App, after downloading and installing application, users can take a photo of the view outside the airport's building with their devices, passengers inside the building can view the 80-meter-tall "Evangelion Unit-01" flying, landing on the apron and standing beside an airplane.
Culture
When we talk about the anime, it is easy to mention Japanese anime. ANA announced the Evangelion anime franchise, they augmented reality application that visitors can do something really cool at Haneda Airport while waiting for the flights. The app will display the 80 meters tall Evangelion Unit-01 at selected points in the departure lobby and arrival area of Terminal 2, where is used by ANA. It also provides different languages to support international users.
Technical
Recently, computers and phones are indispensable in people’s life. It is a new way to attract visitors’ attention on the locational applications. The EVA App in Haneda video image added to the real scene using the AR technology that passengers could see a full-size EVA Unit 01 outside the airport terminal window after touched the screen. This interactive function brings lots of enjoyment to users. It is pretty cool to snap a shot and show it off to friends on Twitter or Facebook. However, till now the app is just available for Android OS, a release of the app for iOS devices is planned.

Changi Airport
Temporal
One of the world’s best airports is Changi Airport, which located in Singapore and has numerous interesting facilities for passengers to have fun. From high-intensity shooting games to dance machines and sweet catcher machines, the Zone X of Changi features a wide variety of arcade favorites and is a perfect place to kill time for both children and adults alike.
Spatial
It is important to well manage every space and bring its superiority into full play in the airport. Changi Airport is well known for its wide range of facilities and services that keeping passengers occupied while their waiting. Take forest-themed indoor playground for an example, it is a fully padded and child-safe playground, children can bounce on trampolines and try the tunnel slides while you do some plane spotting. The playground is only for children between 18 months to 12 years old and it has a height limit at 1.45m.
Culture
Airport represents a important part of the city’s impression, or even the country’s. Basically, airport is the first place you will arrive when you visit a foreign country. In this case cultural services or display functions are considered to be significant essential. Changi tend to show their culture through the nature garden and galleries. Before application of paint and paintbrushes, woodblock rubbing was the common art form in Singapore between 1950s and 1960s. With the carved woodblocks, ink, icons that inspired from popular culture and created by Singapore artist Justin Lee, plus a little creativity, you can actually make your own woodblock prints too.
Technical
Compare to other airports, Changi offers interactive services for their visitors rather than free Wi-Fi, TV, big screen, duty-free shop or public computers. If the dulling effect of a long flight has yet to wear off, visitors can be sure that the motion simulators at the state-of-the-art 3D and 4D cinemas will perk their senses. Besides, children can enjoy themselves with Xbox kinect sports and the Xbox360 while watching the latest blockbusters or listening soothing music ranging from jazz to classical and lounge. Best of all, there’s a cafeteria serving local and international snacks when passengers’ stomachs start rumbling! Now, the most popular site in Changi is the social tree, a new attraction that blends avant-garde design with interactive technology, allowing travelers to share their photo and video memories instantly on their social networks and to retrieve the digital memories from this memory capsule.

Strengths
A mobile device game allows user to gain awareness of which items are prohibited at the airport according to the airport security department. Especially, the application can determine airport to which you are the closest, and the prohibited items listed by that airport will be shown. In addition, the game includes social networking features in that it can be connected to your Facebook account. If you complete the achievement, you will be rewarded a souvenir. Besides, every airport has its unique souvenir. Therefore, international travelers can obtain a host of different souvenirs.
Weakness
Although the operation for this game is overall simplistic, the view of visual design and graphic display is monotonous. Moreover, the list of the prohibited items is incomplete. Numerous supplements of prohibited items need to be added.
Opportunities
Similar games for checking contraband goods as passing the customs are still rare. As a result, users will still be curious and thus attracted to the application. Furthermore, through this game, traveler’s awareness to avoid carrying prohibited items will be increased.
Threats
Since the game is easy to operate, and the design logic is simple, to imitate the game may not be a complicated endeavor, which means that the game should be updated regularly to maintain its originality and creativity. Otherwise, it will easily be surpassed by new applications and fade out from under the spot light.

Sago
Sago Mini Monster is a creative game application which can be installed on any devices. This application is designed for kids aged 2 to 4. To develop the kids’ imagination and creativity, this game has no time limit and has an easy operation for kids. The users can create their own colourful monsters and make them “feel happy” with paint, food, and decorations. Also, there is no undo bottom for kids to remove what they did in the last step, but they can shake the devices to make all the additional items fall off monsters’ faces. Once the monsters are finished, users can also take photos and share them with their parents.
Strengths
The entire game is designed with a simple structure and an easy operation. The main concept of this application is an object creation with various items available for decoration. With colour, shapes, a blank slate of monster’s body, the kids can experiment and express themselves in embellishing it. Also, this game is expected to foster interactions among kids and their parents and the application.
Weakness
The game can only be used for creating monsters, playing with them, and sharing them with parents. It would be enhanced if the application can provide more functions for the users, making it more interesting with more engagement from the users.
Opportunities
The game includes kid’s part and parents’ part. In the kid’s part, the users can create their own monsters and play with them. In the parent section, there are some suggestions as to how to interact with kids and extend learning for assisting the kids in developing stories with their monster as a literacy-building activity.
Threats
With no time limitation, users may spend too much time on the game. When players do so much on electronic devices, it may be harmful to the users’ eyes. It would be well-advised to make some rules to control or limit the use.

DuckieDeck
Overview
Duckie Deck is a game developer that focuses on creative development in toddlers and preschoolers; the Duckie Deck Monsters is their latest interactive app that helps toddlers overcome fear of the dark and shadows. "Most youngsters have a fear of the dark at some point. With the help of Monsters, we want to enable kids to not only adjust to the dark, but to befriend it as well," explains Duckie Deck. "Soon, their active imaginations will be transforming the spookiest shadows into jolly characters."
Strengths
With colorful graphics, dynamic elements and fun sound effects, this game can capture a child's imagination effectively. The simple user interface makes it easy for kids to play independently, or together with a friend or a family member. The app’s goal is for kids to have fun while learning and developing their motor skills and coordination. Most importantly, creators of Monster marks that this app is designed to be completely safe and to protect children.
Weakness
Even though all the monsters are incredibly cute and adorably interactive, they do not come with names for each of them. Maybe it is better to tag names to them so that the kids will not forget what the monster is when they are playing.
Opportunities
Maybe after the Pixar's Monsters cartoon, the monsters have become more approachable to kids nowadays and darkness were something really frightening. So under the inspiration of the film, monsters are now very lovely friends who would appear in the light where they move and dance, sometime play a tune. This is a simple yet brilliant idea in the making of this app, plus, the graphic design is of a high standard.
Threats
When the light is off, the shapes of the monsters are still visible. So, when kids play around with them long enough they will be able to guess which monster it is before turning the light back on. Over time the kid will not be surprised at all. Moreover, there is only one way to keep the kids interested in this game. That is by introducing new monsters, or the designers could probably encourage them to create their own monsters.

MonsterMatic
Strengths
This is a game app on mobile devices that allows users to create and 3D PRINT custom designed monsters, and it is free! Players are given tools to invent, interact, share, and ultimately unleash their monsters into the world through 3D printing technology. New monsters and further customization options can be unlocked simply by playing the game. All monster parts are interchangeable, and there still have lot of flexible space for players to discover.
Weakness
The interaction between role and player are scarce. Currently the design is limited to the view of visual design and graphic display. Multidimensional sensory expression should be explored more deeply. Obviously the designers have also noticed the shortage on the sound effects, given that the monsters have not yet got their own voices so far.
Opportunities
3D Printing is still quite a new design fiction like area, for this field users still can maintain freshness and curiosity. Moreover, I think the custom designed 3D PRINT will be a sustainable development model for interactive entertainment and its derivative industry.3D Printing is now one core combination of virtual and real world.
Threats
Just like the other emerging technologies, 3D Printing is also in its infancy. Information is lacking for troubleshooting and there are a lot of trials and errors involved both technically and artistically. Additionally, even though the freedom given to the players to create their own character is pretty impressive, the scope and scale need to be settled carefully in order to balance the enjoyment and availability.
