(warning: there's a scene where derek and malia are naked in front of each other, and it's NOT sexual in the slightest, but since they are technically cousins that could be squicky for people? so be aware.)
“You okay?” Kira asks, when she notices Malia’s having trouble focusing on her homework.
“Yeah, sorry. I was just wondering about something. Hey, do you think I’m still capable of the full coyote shift? Or do you think now that I came out of it I’ve lost that ability for good?”
“I don’t know,” Kira says. “I’m sure you can still do it. Derek taught himself to do a full shift, maybe he could help you?”
"Yeah, maybe,” Malia replies.
“I could go with you to ask him, you know. If you want.”
Malia nods, and starts gathering up her stuff and Kira says, “Oh, um, now?”
“Oh,” Malia says, pausing. “Well, yeah. Why not?”
Kira laughs, but she’s smiling as she gets up. “Okay, yeah, sure. That works.”
***
Malia doesn’t even knock when they get to Derek’s. She just digs around in her backpack for a key, and then unlocks the door and walks right in. Kira follows behind her, much more timidly.
“Derek,” Malia calls, walking around his living room and eventually they hear him coming down the stairs.
“Hey,” Malia says.
“Hey,” he says, nodding at both of them. “Is something wrong?”
“No,” Malia says. “I was just wondering if you thought I'd be able to do the full shift anymore.”
“Definitely,” Derek says. “I know that you’re a Tate, not a Hale. But you are a Hale by blood and almost every Hale woman could do a full shift. My mom could, and my older sister Laura, and my younger sister Cora could as well. Cora has kind of shaky control over it, but she can do it sometimes. And Since you’ve done it before, I’m sure you can. You just have to trust yourself.”
“Do you think you can help her?” Kira asks.
“Yeah, definitely,” Derek says. “You’re going to need to be naked if you want to pull it off though because clothes are going to get in the way of letting the shift takeover. If that’s weird for you I can just tell you how and then leave?”
“No,” Malia says. “It’s fine. Nudity doesn’t bother me, and I think I need you to show me the full shift instead of just telling me. So, you’ll be focused on yourself and not paying any attention to me anyway.”
“Okay,” Derek nods, and they both pulls their shirts over their heads.
Kira looks away quickly. “Uh, I can, um go?”
“No, stay," Malia says. "I think it’ll help me to have as many familiar people in the room to focus my senses on as possible. And like I said, nudity doesn’t bother me. I did spend most of my life as a coyote living in the woods.”
Kira nods, and swallows, before choking out, “Oh, uh, yeah okay sure.” She keeps her gaze firmly fixed above Malia’s head though as her and Derek keep stripping out of their clothes. She’s had a ridiculous, pathetic crush on Malia for months now and she doesn’t want to be a creep and take advantage of the totally innocent situation by gawking at her.
She hears Derek say, “Okay, so what I do is just close my eyes, and then that feeling that you latch onto and pull to the surface to do the partial shift? Just grab onto it and pull it through, don’t try to control it. Just let it take over completely,” and then out of the corner of her eye she sees him start to shift.
A few moments later when she looks over at where he was there’s a giant black wolf there instead.
“Okay,” Malia says. Kira locks her eyes on Malia’s face, refusing to look anywhere else and watches as Malia lets her eyes slip shut. She stands there for several minutes and when Kira cautiously drops her eyes to Malia's hands she can see her claws popping in and out, but nothing happens beyond that.
After a few more moments Derek is standing there as a person again. An extremely naked person and Kira quickly casts her eyes to the ceiling.
“You’re thinking too much,” Derek says. “You just have to feel, okay? Try again,” and then after shutting his eyes for a moment he slips into the shape of a wolf again. Kira can see Malia close her eyes again and then after a few minutes of nothing, she starts shifting.
Once she’s done she bounds over to Kira and nudges her snout against Kira’s leg, tail wagging happily. Kira kneels down and puts her arms around Malia’s neck hugging her tightly. “I’m so proud of you,” she says, and Malia shuffles in closer until Kira loses her balance and goes toppling down.
Malia looks down at her, almost sheepishly, at least as sheepishly as a coyote can look and then plops down next to her on the floor. She cuddles up close to Kira, and Kira runs her fingers through Malia’s fur, enjoying the way she can feel happy noises vibrating through Malia’s throat underneath her fingers.
She sees Derek shift back into a human, but she’s almost too distracted by the way Malia is nuzzling her head against her neck to notice him grabbing his clothes and leaving the room. Malia rests her head on Kira’s chest and shuts her eyes, just resting there peacefully for a moment while Kira continues to run her fingers through her fur.
Before too long, though, Malia backs off and shifts back into a human, and Kira averts her eyes again. She hears Malia shout, “Can you believe I did it?” though and then suddenly Malia is kissing her. Her lips a slightly wet and firm presence against Kira’s own, and then just as suddenly as they were there, they’re gone.
“Shit,” Malia says. “I’m so sorry.”
“Oh, uh, no, that was fine. That was good. I mean. If you want to kiss that is definitely something we can do,” Kira stutters out, keeping her eyes fully locked on the ceiling.
Malia huffs out a quiet laugh, and then she’s kissing Kira again, the fingers of one hand tangling in Kira’s hair and the fingers of the other brushing over her jaw. Kira kisses her back, slow and deep, and then pulls away for just long enough to whisper, “I’m so proud of you,” before kissing her senseless once again.
“Just my luck”, Kira said, trying to pry apart the elevator doors, “As if I wasn’t late enough for my curfew.”
Lydia shrugged at that, “That’s not gonna help, we’re going to be stuck here.”
Kira groaned and looked around. Allison was sitting on the ground with Lydia in her lap.
“You can just call your mom and say you decided to come over with us to study?” Allison suggested. The pack meeting had run too late, but maybe Kira could salvage breaking curfew, if she turned it into a study sleepover. Her mom would probably be happy that she was spending time out of the house, and out of pack business.
A few minutes and an awkward conversation later, Kira sat on the floor across from the two girls.
“So what do we do now? Wait for someone to realize that the elevator doesn’t work? In a building that houses one person?” Kira asked.
“Well… Scott and Stiles are still up with Derek”, Allison said, but Lydia shook her head with a small laughter.
“Oh they’re not coming out until the morning”, Lydia lifted an eyebrow and wiggled it at them both. Allison burst into laughter and rewarded Lydia with a small kiss.
It had been a long half an hour and Lydia had decided to pry into Kira’s private life.
“Is there anyone? You’ve been so alone after Scott”, Lydia tilted her head, “Because we’ve been thinking…”
“Oh my god, Lydia, here?” Allison looked to Kira who was beyond confused.
“No, there’s no one. What’s this about anyways?”
“Well, we both really like you”, Lydia said, ignoring Allison.
“I like you guys too?”
“No I mean, really like you”, Lydia said, getting on her hands and knees and started toward Kira.
“I-I-“, Kira stuttered as Lydia kissed her crawling into her lap. Kira returned the kiss, but withdrew to look at Allison, who was smiling.
“We were wondering if –“ Allison said and Kira nodded.
“Yes”, She said kissing Lydia again, lifting her off her lap. Then she crawled to Allison and kissed her too, “Yes.”
“Oh and you just have to use your Kitsune electric shok and we’ll be out of here in no time”, Lydia winked, wiping her lipstick from Kira’s face.
AU where Kira and Lydia both get into NYU after high school. They're worried about moving so far away when things can still be unstable in Beacon Hills, but it's calmed down a lot and Scott insists that they go. He tells them that the opportunity is too great to pass up and that he's got enough pack members left in California plus enough alliances with other nearby packs to keep Beacon Hills safe. After a lot of deliberating, they decide to go ahead and go. And somewhere between studying until three am and the movie nights Kira insists on having every friday night, a romantic relationship forms between them.
I went away for a year and Derek packshacks with a werecoyote, a kitsune, a bansee and there's a werejaguar involved somehow? Cora was pouring cereal and watching the patchwork pack interact with each other. The only one she hadn't seen was Kira, but she was coming over soon, according to Derek.
Cora opened the fridge and reached for the milk, to find none.
"Derek, milk's out!" Cora groaned as the front door opened.
"Good thing that I brought some!" Cora's head snapped up to look at the girl. Her black hair was on double braids and she was wearing her over-sized lacrosse shirt and some skinny jeans. Cora gave her a look from head to toe and was struck by a pull towards her. She smiled at Cora timidly and came over to the kitchen island.
"Hi, I'm Kira, here's the milk", she said, "you must be Cora." Cora nodded and took the milk, absolutely staring at Kira shamelessly.
"Cora", she stuttered then and managed a small smile and Kira smiled back.
Maybe packshacking was a better idea than she had thought before.
AU: Beacon Hills library has a less than decent selection, so Kira takes to haunting the massive bookstore around the corner, curling up on the floor and reading novels she fully intends to buy – until she finishes them. She’s not exactly subtle, as Allison discovers when she’s scheduled to work over Christmas, tripping over her every time she goes to restock The Hunger Games. Still, Allison has to admit, the girl is pretty cute.
The fourth time Allison finds her, Kira asks her to a party, and it’s all over from there.
